Three years ago, my grandpa died of Alzheimers. Everyone in my family was very close to him. There was a period of three days where he was in a sort of coma in the nursing home he was in.
On the night before his death I had a dream. I was standing in an empty room in his nursing home that was used for people to sit and read if someone was visiting someone and they couldn't go in. This was usually if someone was really sick or to meet with a lawyer or whatever reason.
Anyways, I was sitting in the room by myself when there was a knock on the door. I opened it and my grandpa was standing in front of me. In real life, he hadn't left his wheel chair in like a year.
He was in his full military dress since he was in WWII. All his medals were on and he had his favorite hat that had the name of his division. The 28th division to be exact. His hair was nice and trim and he was smiling at me. He told me not to worry. He was ok and he had all his memories back and he was sorry that he forgot them. (Omg I'm crying now trying to write this...)
He gave me a hug and told me to tell my grandma he loved her and he turned around and walked away. I woke up at, I'll never forget this time, 8:01 am crying my eyes out.
An hour later my mom came home. She was at the nursing home with my grandma and i didn't know she was. My grandpa had died at 8:00am peacefully in his sleep.

I htink that that was your grandpa's way of saying good bye. Perhaps if you astral travelled then you could see him again. Just a suggestion(not trying to make it worse.)

*sigh* i know how to astral project, as i have been using that talent to continue studying under my magic teacher (he died to, i cried alot so i know how you feel hon) but if you wish i could inquire to one of my gods (nyarlathotep probably) about him... i could get the info for you and maybe if you focus hard enough you wont be afraid, as the eternal desert is a peaceful place.
