As far as I know, it wasn't in the book, although it is stated in the book that he took out the people who blew the whistle on Watergate. Hence without the Watergate scandal and the victory over Vietnam, Nixon was able to stay in power. To be honest, though, I felt the whole Comedian assasinating Kennedy was a bit corny, along with a few other scenes. The gore was also a bit over blown, except for the scenes where Manhattan blows people apart. I was really kind of disappointed by how cartoony the palace on Mars looked.

I went and saw it again, this time IMAX and with friends. I got a bit more into it this time. Plus I was able to take in a lot more of the subtler background details, like the newspaper clippings on Hollis's wall.
