This is by far one of my most favorite RPG games and there are lots of reasons behind it. We can chat about anything related to this game and how the makers managed to sort of imprint a mystic feeling of magic blended in with Sci-Fi.
I love how the world is all technological and they still manage to have not just monsters to fight but magic as well. The best part is that in order to be able to cast magic, you depend on these stones called "Materias" and even the weapons/armor in the world are made so they can hold some of these stones in them. Granted not all the weapons in the game are able to hold materia in them but most of them are. Just Cloud's starting weapon is able to hold 2 and that's a lot when starting out.

So, what do you like about this made up world? Do you think they did a good job blending magic with technology?
That and more can be discussed here so, go ahead and post why doncha? 3nodding

While I enjoyed FFVII, I didn't feel that it was particularly 'sci-fi', just fantasy with a more technologically advanced background.
I think that, to qualify as 'sci-fi', there needs to be advanced technology ahead of what is in common use in our world today... I don't know if that's how it's officially defined, but that's the sort of thing that I think of...
Whereas FFVII seems a bit like steampunk, perhaps call it 'materiapunk', what do you think?

As if a city existing on a giant disc isn't advanced.
"Its cus of that &^#$# 'pizza' that the people underneath are sufferin'" says Barret.

Berzerker Prime called FFVII magepunk rather than steampunk, and I agree with her.

Yeah, it's more advanced than the standard quasi-medieval fantasy setting, with industrialisation & suchlike, but weren't the more 'ficitional science' aspects like robots & stuff powered by Materia?
So, although it's 'science-like', it's actually just magic given the appearance of technology... as you/Berz say 'magepunk' would be an appropriate term.

Final Fantasy VI is more of a medieval/renaissance kind of setting with industrial aspects in it I find, what with the Magitek Empire and all.

FFVII is more on the sci-fi side, but the term Magepunk suits it better than outright sci-fi.

Great point Mel! I thought that a city on top of another sity was pretty Sci-Fi-esque. I also liked how they claimed to extract energy from the earth itself. How else can you do that other than with some kind of technology we couldn't even dream of? At the time though, I also thought that the airship was pretty Sci-Fi as well. I have yet to see a ship in this century that is not a blimp and can look like the Highwind (not to mention fly as fast when in it's second form).

I wonder if Berz said magepunk on account of Cloud looking like a punk and being able to use magic. mrgreen

Magitek Empire? I hope to see FF VI released for the DS so I can play it.

Say, didn't Star Trek (on one of it's episodes) have some sort of fantasy-like adventure? I don't know why but I seem to recall something with a medieval motif. Maybe I'm imagining things...

I don't know if it's been released for the DS but it has been released for Playstation in Final Fantasy Anthology (it comes with Final Fantasy 5 too).

I don't care about remakes for PS cuz I no longer have one. Since I've noticed that Square is re-releasing all of the first FF games on the DS, I keep hoping we'll also see the 7th one on DS sometime before the console's life expires. 3nodding

BTW, did anyone see the poll on GameFAQs about which game is more popular? They had Chrono Trigger compete against FF7 and, guess which one won? I was amazed that FF7 actually outvoted CT. I thought for sure Chrono would get more votes but I was pleasantly surprised. I like FF7 more and now I can say it after I've played them both. 3nodding

Unfortunately, I've never had the pleasure of playing the original Final Fantasy VII. But I've seen Advent Children and played Dirge of Cerberus.
From all I've experienced of the FF7 realm is that it is in it own way Sci-Fi, yet still captures the idea that it isn't that far progressed from our current technologies and the way we live our lives. There are certain things that are far more advanced for sure, but it also brings a little medieval into it, fighting with swords and battling monsters.
anyway, that's all I can put at the moment, please tell what you guys think of this.

I agree with you Brad! I liked FF7 cuz I got the feeling of fantasy mixed with sci-fi. I mean, where else in sci-fi can you fight monsters of such amazing sizes? Not to mention how varied the monsters can be. I liked the Midgar Zolom when I first saw it but I kinda hated how uberly powerful it is when you first encounter the huge snake. Just for fun, I hung out in the area of the darn snake one one of my play-throughs just to see if I could get my characters to a high enough level to actually fight one or two without a need for catching a chocobo (I know catching one is easy but I wanted a challenge I could do). Guess what? I needed to get my characters to level 40 (not to mention the materia needed to get to level 3) for us to be able to beat one without much problem. Some of them even learned the special attack of the snake called "Beta". It's a mighty fire attack that you can only learn if you have the "Enemy Skill" materia equipped.

So, you did play Dirge, huh? How is it exactly? Can you tel us more about it? I heard it wasn't as great as the one I played (the original one)... mrgreen

I can't wait to see Advent Chidlren! I think I'll be able to see it this month. whee
