I think i mightve mentioned this before in here but cant remember.
I drive a 2002 Mitsubishi Montero Sport.
I busted my power steering pump off-roading.
I know its just the pump, the fluid flies out of the pump, right behind where the belt sits.
So i took the belt off, so i wouldnt further damage the pump or car.
Would i be able to rebuild it, or should i just replace it?
Found out Napa sells em for 300 bucks, dealership 700.
Junkyard, prolly alot cheaper.
Im pretty much on a budget on everything due to bills.
Would i be able to keep driving it without the use of the pump for about a month or so?
No rough driving, and thats the last time i go off-roading (with that car).
Most of the driving i do anyways is just from home to work and vice-versa.
friends house on occasion due to the pump.
I dont know what else to throw in, but please tell me anything and everything you know about power steering pumps, fixing them, replacing them, steps i should take, pre-cautions, etc.

commonly, you can't rebuild pumps it's a thing that is easier to replace and has a warranty on the part if it is defective go here and enter your info and see if you can't find one for the cheap http://www.car-part.com/index.htm

Thanks SpeedMan, the site says theres one at this junkyard i know.
Also is there any way to find out if pumps vary from year to year?
I was at a pick n pull, and the pump on a 98 Montero, was in the exact same spot as it is on my 02 Montero Sport.
Same spot, same assembly, pretty much same everything, just wasnt sure if itd be interchangeble.

Just make sure that its actually your pump and not the line that's attached to it. The braided rubber ones don't seem to like high-pressure situations when they have to constantly feed the rack.

I think its a seal of some sort, no idea.
the wheel that turns the pump is moved by a belt thats connected to the fan.
fan is moved by another belt.
the part where the turning wheel goes in, thats where its leaking.
ill try to get a picture soon.

Oh its near the pulley? You can grab a rebuild kit for the PS pump that would have that seal.

yeah i think it is, not gonna know till i take it apart.
i pretty much have one whole day to get it in working order if im going to take it apart.
my dad needs to borrow it for moving something.
ill take a vid or a picture tomorow when its light out.

That sucks! Good luck on finding a replacement. What were you doing to bust the pump off-road? My loaner until I fix my Vig is a 98 Montero (full size not sport) and I've already taken it "baja-ing" a few times, I don't want a repeat of your incident. I've already noticed how pricy parts for these DSM's are. sad
I'll take a look at my chiltons and see what it says about the pump.

It looks like you're only compatible with 2000 through 2004 power steering pumps.
The good news is if you only need the seal, a dealership should be able to tell you exactly which one you need and it should run you about $30.00

The same exact thing happened to my friend.
Except he drives a 1991 Toyota Tacoma..or T100...whatever.
