Magic
The basic foundations for magic in Direnla are ones of balance: Magic is divided into two overall types with further subgroups and elemental associations. Light and Dark magic are both seen as equally necessary to maintain a proper balance in accordance with the primary religion.
Light magic
Life (Healing magic) (Anyone know the greek for "life"? <.< >.>)
Air (aeromancy)
Water (hydromancy)
Dark magic
Death (necromancy)
Earth (geomancy)
Fire (pyromancy)
Heretical magic
There is also a form of magic that is seen as heretical by the religious and extremely dangerous by more skeptical mages. Its formal name is aposkiasmancy, more commonly referred to as shadowmancy. Shadowmancy is considered heretical because shadows in and of themselves are believed to be an imbalance between light and darkness. There is only one known shadowmancer in Direnla, although he hints towards there being more.
Shadowmancy is inherently dangerous because working with shadows, in every documented case, has been known to cause the mage to slowly go insane. There are no exceptions to this rule, as far as the common mage is concerned, although a few radical theologians have considered trying an experiment, where a perfectly stable person with previous knowledge of magic tries to learn shadowmancy. Every time, the temples of Luna, Solcan, and Rydal have collectively shut the experiment down before anything began.
((Again, I'll add more later. More on shadowmancy and probably a bit on the theory of souls. Then I can start getting into: *drumroll* TECHNOLOGY!))
