Yeah, so. Time to talk about me. *preens* I'm from a large city-state known as Direnla (Pronounced: djeer-EHN-lah). It's an economic trade center for the country of Dalmaek (djal-MAHK), and a gathering point for some of the world's most brilliant mages.

Well, it was, up until about seventy years before I was born. That's when mages, who had previously been the ruling class (What, you think just anybody can learn magic?), stepped down from their seat of political power. The threat of a peasant uprising with their horrid technology seemed to take some of the fight out of mages.

So, with the new government trying to get their feet under them and a strong distrust of mages common among the populace, is when my story comes into play.

Cast:

Seishak Rydal:

Me, of course. I come into play in this story at the age of 21. Immediately seen, I've put off taking on an apprentice for several months now, I'm from a well-known and established family of necromancers (indeed, we're named after the God of Death himself, Rydal), I've had a horrid magical accident where my soul got implanted in my hair, and... ah, well, a bit embarrassing to say this now, but I've been bandied about as "the slut of Direnla" for a few years.

What no one realizes, of course, is the fact that my cousin, Morrith, has molested me repeatedly since the age of 12. Still does at this point, in fact. But, since no one knows this (yet), it's a bit hard to explain my sexual promiscuity. Something, I might add, I saw as a necessity at that point rather than anything to get any real pleasure out of.

Lyshev Kirrith:

My first apprentice, and a very frustrating case. He's only a couple of years younger than me, which is an extreme oddity, since mages who don't know how to control their magic while going through puberty can become a tad... dangerous. However, he's from the slums, where a Seeker only comes through to assess youngsters every seven years since the new regime.

He's part Kresari, which makes his being a mage even more odd, but has so far managed to keep things under control. I blame the drugs he took until just a year prior to his apprenticeship, when his older sister died of an overdose.

Lyshev has what's referred to as a learning disorder in my creator's world. He has to piece his knowledge together little by little, which makes book-study and standard methods of teaching him magic a futile effort.

Sar Kashida:

Sar... Okay, I admit it. I hate the guy. He gets on my nerves, he's a convict, and he's a shadowmancer. What more do I have to say? Ow, okay, fine. I'll tell you as much as anyone knows about him.

He's about the same age as me (30, in case you didn't know), and I guess he met the shadowmancer who taught him when he was just a kid. Sar doesn't talk about his family, other than saying he hated his dad, so I'm guessing the guy was a d**k. But I'll tell you, when Sar started learning shadowmancy, his sanity cracked. I heard him talking about his early training, and he literally described it as hearing something crack.

The guy's unstable. He EATS shadows. Not just the physical ones, but I guess he says there's shadows on people's hearts. The way he talks, I think he eats all the darkness in people's hearts. And here's the really creepy part: their darker personalities stay with him.

Have I said enough of this guy yet?

Hrmph. I'll add in more later. Tell me what you think so far, hmm?

I'm intrigued by this "peasant technology." What kind of technology could cause the mages to simply step down? And what happened to the mages after they stepped down? Were they allowed to simply mix with the populace? Do they have to somehow "mark" themselves as mages, or do they have some sort of distinctive marking already?

Peasant technology basically means guns. In addition, medical technology had advanced far enough for CPR to be available, even though most normal healing is still done by mages. CPR being available and able to be learned by anybody... well, it put a fair few necromancers out of a job, seeing as a healer's magic only works while the person's heart is still beating.

Mages were allowed to mingle with the rest of the population, although their long hair has always set them apart. Since they generally are able to get higher-paying jobs in a city where mechanized industry is just getting started, they're still generally the upper class, financially. It's only been 100 years - some of the mages that had originally stepped down are still alive and doing well. They wouldn't have simply given up their wealth, after all.

This may be a stupid question: are the souls of all the mages in their hair, like Seishak's (if I may be so informal), or is it connected with their power, or is there some other reason they keep their hair long? Do any of the mages help out with the mechanization? In my world, most mechanization wasn't possible without the mages, and once they were gone... well, I'll write a thread on it sometime next week. And with the mages, is their power based on elements, or is it pretty much the same across the board? You mentioned healers and necromancers, but what other types of mages are there?

Ahaha, Seishak is an exception with his soul-hair. He's actually devoted any and all of his free time to researching how to reverse the accident. Most mages keep their hair long because it's a sign of wealth. Unnecessarily long hair is time-consuming and expensive to keep up, and would get in the way of physical labor.

All the rest... well, I suppose I should just start working on a world thread for TomK 3nodding
