Have you read your Pratchett today?
  Does the Patrician wear black?
Nah, I'm waiting for the lilac to bloom.
No. I don't read those things. (Why am I here?)
You can't tell me that's worth tuppence! (Mother Dismass option)

I could have sworn this was already a topic, but it's neither here nor in the Old Threads subforum. So...pTerry is very quotable, as we all know. In fact, most of our friends and family are probably very familiar with that fact as well - at least mine are. So post your favorite quote here! Please reference which book you're borrowing from (or whether it's from The Man Himself, and where you found it), that way the rest of us don't have to pore over the books looking for it. Or, in the case of the more obsessive members, so we can go right to it and double-check your spelling and syntax.

I personally like, and have used, this one: "Build a man a fire, and he'll be warm for a day. Set a man on fire, and he'll be warm for the rest of his life." Not sure where it's from, because I found it on a website that never referenced. Though I did also like his criticism of J K Rowling, the writer of books featuring wizards, witches, magic, trolls, goblins (and various other mystical creatures) whilst not knowing she was writing fantasy

Although this one from Hogfather is good:

An education was a bit like a communicable sexual disease. It made you unsuitable for a lot of jobs and then you had the urge to pass it on.
Terry Pratchett, Hogfather

By the way, for the Harry Potter thing, go here

*read link*
*sigh*
Sometimes I really love sweet Jo Rowling, and other times I think she'd do best if she could somehow glue her own lips together. She made something wonderful. Then she starts rambling on about sexual orientation and how the fantasy genre is awful. And it's clear she's not really doing it with the intention of being an a** - I think maybe she just still hasn't realized how influential she is, and to how many people. Or how quickly the media can blow a cast-off statement way out of proportion. I have suspicions about how Rita Skeeter came into existence...

Anyway...sometime or other I may change my sig, so I'll put that quote here:

"Let grammar, spelling and punctuation enter your life. Yes, publishers have people who will do this sort of thing - and they are called authors."
- Terry Pratchett

I'm not actually sure where it comes from. I believe it was an interview in which he was asked what advice he would give to young aspiring authors. It was just one of those things where I was so profoundly in agreement and needed to write it down so I wouldn't forget it...that I forgot to note down where I picked it up. mrgreen

Oh man, that's a great quote, NannyOgg! I get so annoyed when I read a book that is poorly edited.

And that's my favorite quote of all, Kettch. 3nodding My aspiration is to become a professor, so that Hogfather quote is quite apt for me!

I also like these quotes, although I don't remember where they're all from:
"It would seem that you have no useful skill or talent whatsoever," he said. "Have you thought of going into teaching?"
(I like that one for the same reason as the above one.)

I'll be more enthusiastic about encouraging thinking outside the box when there's evidence of any thinking going on inside it.

In ancient times cats were worshiped as gods; they have not forgotten this.

Real stupidity beats artificial intelligence every time.

The truth may be out there, but lies are inside your head.

I'm sure there are more I like, but those are the ones I can think of right now.

That top one is from the Death Trilogy......either Reaper Man or Mort. Not sure which. But I like it. I used to want to teach, too, lol

Here from Nightwatch, the new deacon of the Cemetary of Small Gods' view of Havelock Vetinari: "...a forward thinking man who wouldn't cling to the relics of the past..."

Then, of course, the song of the revolution, parts of which are censored in polite company, so I shan't post them. Plus, I'm not that far into it again yet

"Did Hardcore say he saw dis troll's badge?"

"No, but he says the troll threatened to ram it where the sun doesn't shine," said Vimes.

Detritus nodded gravely. "Dat's a long way to go just to ruin a good badge," he said.

"By the way," said Vimes, "that was a lucky guess of yours, guessing that it was Hardcore."

"It come to me in a flash, sir," said Detritus. "I fort: what b*****d who sells Slab to kids deserves bein' nailed up by his ears, sir, and...bingo. Dis idea just formed in my head."

(Feet of Clay, during Cheery's interview. I wish cops could really do that sort of thing. Until I think of Quirke doing it...there's always someone, y'know?)

"There's lots of people will help you with the alcohol business, but there's no one out there arranging little meetings where you can stand up and say, 'My name is Sam and I'm a really suspicious b*****d.'"
- Feet of Clay (after he was supposed to be found drunk with a bag of arsenic in his desk)

This quote is from Jingo...my daughter's favorite. And she didn't recognize that the quote was from Jingo, until I showed it to her. Took me a while to find it, too...my index finger was broken, and I had a hard time reading...

In the hall of the house of Death is a clock with a pendulum like a blade but with no hands, because in the house of Death there is no time but the present. (There was, of course, a present before the present now, but that was also the present. It was just an older one.)

"Veni, Vici...Vetinari"
- Vetinari, from Jingo

I'm totally gonna make my own bumper sticker one of these days, and this one's at the top of the list.

"Nanny Ogg says you have to grab time by the foreskin." -Agnes Nitt, Carpe Jugulum

I had forgotten about that one...I laughed when I read it again.

"You're humming, Sam," said Sybil, after a while. "That means that something awful is going to happen to somebody...And when you grin in that shiny sort of way it means that someone's playing silly buggers and doesn't know you've just thrown a six."
- The Fifth Elephant
