Is there a part of the novel by Gaston Leroux you would've liked to have seen in the play or the movie that wasn't in it?

I would have liked to see the Daroga in the musical in general, although considering what they did with Madame Giry, it wouldn't make much sense. Oh, well; there are other musicals for that, I suppose. And I think that the balcony scene at Philippe's home would have been terribly interesting.

I pitied Erik more in the book then the movie.

Wouldn't you be infuriated that the musical is so far from the book? The movie, ironically enough, incorporates some of the book into it -- more than the musical, at least.
Erik's not pitiable enough in the movie, I agree.

I'm thinking the mirror torture chamber would have been interesting... the Persian would have been good too.

The only problem is the torture chamber would have been hard to convey on stage, I think. But, I suppose it would have been possible or, I don't know. It's probably good they cut that out, but in a movie, they ought to have put it in. At least in some movie version.
Sorry, my brains are addled tonight.

Actually, they DID try to put in the mirror chamber in the movie... after the Masquerade Scene, I think it was, Raoul dropped through a hole in the forum floor, and landed in a room with rotating mirrors. If my memory serves me.
It would have been difficult, but I bet there's a way to do it.

Yes, they did and I was terribly pleased with that. I think that's probably the best they'd be able to do under the circumtances. I will admit, the only thing that allowed me to watch the film without going crazy in a cinema aisle was the nods to Leroux they made, which both infuriated and entertained me.

But for the level of interest and general quality of work coming from Schumacher, that short little scene conveyed more or less what the torture chamber consisted of. So a nod to him, but it isn't enough to redeem him.
