I've always wondered what the deal was with it, I'd always seen the videos on youtube and stuff. Well, so I was reading up on it.
The one this year is coming up (starting May 8th) - entry fee of $44,000 and limited to 120 participants. I really ******** want to see this, but they're not coming anywhere near me crying
Anybody ever been there and seen it in person? What are your thoughts? I mean, this is like, the greatest thing ever to me, I would give my nuts to get to do it one year.

I'd love to enter the gumball myself. I'm just not sure what I'd drive though. My heart tells me that a yellow Lamborghini Contach would suit the bill, but aparently they're god awful to drive, never mind at long distance.
I suppose I'd either enter the gumball in either the Veliside NSX or a Zonda.

I would rather use that kind of money for bills and the S13 i want.
Also wtf is up with rich people spending 5k on a ******** sweater.
some b***h came into the airport complaining the airline ruined her 5k dollar sweater and her 1k scarf.
I dont even wanna know how much the rest of the clothes in her 4 giant suitcases cost.
Guesstimating over 50k.

... That's a total of 5 Million, 280 Thousand dollars they make just in entrance fees. Could they possibly spend anywhere close to that amount to organize and fund the race? I doubt it, considering that they don't close any of the roads they use.

Its a "image" thing. I wouldn't even bother to run the Gumball even if I had the money and choice of cars; no closed roads = cannot go all-out where driving is concerned. And if you can't go all-out, why bother to compete?

Guesstimating over 50k. If you ever had a look at really fine tayloring you'd know why some people spend 5k on sweaters. Granted for a sweater I don't see the point in sweating into anything expensive. But when it comes to suits and other fine things, you can see one HELL of a differenence between a 5k suit from Hugo Boss, and a cheapo wallmart suit.

And if you can't go all-out, why bother to compete? The strategy of the Gumball is navigation, timing, endurance, and risk of arrest. At least that's how it was back in the day before all this televised "reality" TV came along.

*Nods.* It has been referred to as a cross-country rally race. Albiet a lot tamer, since it's done mostly on paved roads and whatnot. smile

Gumball 3000 isn't technically a "race", so there's no reason to compete. It's a rally / gathering where you drive 3000 miles, stopping in various places to show off and party. According to officials, those caught actively competing in timed / racing events on public roads are barred from the event. I wouldn't be able to help myself either, though. This year, supposedly, they're stopping at a race track or two to allow people to do their thing whee
I've seen the videos, though, so I know what you mean, plenty of them race and get chased / caught. It's all in good fun, but you have to be very careful when doing s**t like that.
I think what you might be thinking of is the cannonball run?

The idea still isn't quite clicking in my head. For all that's worth I can drive from where I live to Miami for free(not counting the cost of gas and other necessities). I mean, I'm not trying to down grade the idea of the race, well I can't say race because its not one, but that's a large sum of money to do something that shouldn't have to cost nearly that much.

Its blatant stupidity if you ask me, when you can sign up and compete for a year at an interstate rally that is FIA-affiliated, AND which is an actual motorsport event on that budget. Its basically an "event" to give the very rich an opportunity to feel like a racing driver except without the risks of the profession and "cleverly" sidesteps the generic competitor's lack of skill and race-craft by having it on public roads. That isn't rallying, its pointless. Here'a bit of ametuer motorsport THAT's tarmac rallying(just pointed up an incline) And this... Is actual tarmac Rally. Its an actual event called the Targa Tasmania, and its a RACE. Not really the same as a glorified cruise with a 44K entrance fee, eh?
