Getting Started

First of all may I thank you for taking interest, if you are a visitor, and for joining, if you are a new member.

What is The Stone

The Stone was a online repository of visual riddles, which originally required a small outlay to join, for which you also received a "stone" pendant with a (almost) unique set of symbols. The visual riddles were unlike those that had come before, and frequently required research in order to solve. These were not dingbats, rebuses or the like; they frequently told a story, and learned much in the process of solving the riddle. For a short history of The Stone, please visit the wikipedia entry. You will notice upon reading the article that The Stone site shut down on 3rd April, 2008.

Do not worry, however; all is not lost. The Stone site has been recreated almost perfectly as The Stone Monument, part of The Scarecrow`s Field.

The site does require registration, however this is free. And easy. Only 4 fields to fill in, as you can see below.

I've been registered for a couple of months, and have received no spam thus far to that address.

The Stones

The Scarecrow`s Field hosts three distinct, but related entities; The Stone Monument, The Scarecrow`s Field, and also a solve database for The Stone Unturned.
The Stone Monument, as previously remarked, is the collection of original Stone puzzles, where it all began. You will find it subdivided into categories. The Unknown was a taster set of 9 puzzles, available to solve for free when the Stone still required a registration fee. The Immediate is the meat of the collection, where most of the puzzles reside. The other categories correspond to later additions; read the wikipedia article for more information.
Both The Stone Unturned and The Scarecrow`s Field are collections of puzzles submitted by members of the community. The Stone Unturned, unlike the other two collections, does not require registering in order to access and solve the puzzles.

NB

The Stone Unturned solve database at the Scarecrow's Field is just that; a means of keeping track of which puzzles you have solved. In order to show that you have solved a puzzle, and so access the info for that puzzle, you must first input the answer. For mulit-part puzzles this means giving the solution to the 10th part. It is not intended to be a means of playing those puzzles; to do so, please use the Stone Unturned site

Technical Note for Firefox Users

The Stone began in 1995, and as such some of these puzzles are written in code which is, in www terms, state-of-the-ark. The web-browser world has changed since then; netscape is no more, and Mozilla has taken over the reigns.

If you are a firefox user, you will find that, rather than getting a nice caption "tool-tip" when hovering over images in some of the puzzles, as you do in IE, you get

[removed]window.status='
';void(0)

instead in the status bar on mouse hover. This is due to the differing ways that IE and firefox handle the window.status property, and also the fact that firefox disables processing of window.status by default, and has done so since version 1.5.
So either:
1) strip the caption out of the above code, as this is hardly an arduous task for a puzzler of your calibre, or
2) if that doesn't appeal aesthetically as a solution to you, you can check "Tools → Options → Content → Enable JavaScript / Advanced → Allow scripts to change status bar text". This won't give you the nice tool-tip behaviour of IE, but will display the caption in the status bar unadulterated when you click the picture. On hover it still looks like a dog`s dinner.

Layout of the Guild

The guild is currently split up into subcategories corresponding to the different collections of puzzles. Ish. As this was a second(or 3rd/4th/5th)-hand guild, there are lots of subforums to use. More than will be initially needed. I intend to have riddles that I have solved sorted into their subcategory, and ones that I'm working on in the main forum.

Each puzzle will receive its own thread, the opening post of which should include an image of the puzzle. In the case of a puzzle requiring some form of user interaction to reveal the final image, before and after images will be posted. Any captions and other pertinant information will be included. The post following will be reserved for spoilered hints to be filled in once the puzzle has been solved, and then the posts after that will be left open for discussion of the puzzle.

But...until the guild is thriving, or I have slightly more time, there will probably be puzzles that you would like to discuss, but don't have a thread set up yet. If this is the case, please

1)Double check that a thread hasn't been set up first for the puzzle. have you looked at the subforums?
2)If there is no thread for the puzzle, start a new thread with the puzzle name as the title and reserved as the content in the main Forum, and reply to the thread with a reserved post, then begin discussion/ask questions about it. That way I can add the screenshot and spoilers/hints at a later date in the first two posts.
