For those who don't know, I'm Diabetic. I may have been confirmed it at the beginning of November 2006, but I've known I would be a high risk for it since my late teens. Diabeties affects both sides of my family including my parents and since it can be hereditaty, it was considered enevitable for it to affect me as well. But I possibly could have postponed it a little longer had I eaten wiser and watched my weight better.

I have what is known as type 2 Diabeties. My body still produces some insulin, but for some reason it isn't as effective. Either there is just too much sugar in my system, or my body isn't accepting it. I am currently taking metformin to help encourage my pancreas to produce more insulin, allow my body to accept the sugars more efficiently, and reduce the amount of excess sugar secreted by the liver.

Type 1 Diabeties (also known as Juvenile as it mostly affects younger people) is when the pancreas no longer produces any insulin. And the injections are required.

Gestational Diabetes is a form of Type 2 Diabeties that occures only during pregnancy. Quite often, once the child is born blood sugar levels do return to normal.

These are some of the common symptoms of Diabeties

• fatigue, drowsiness
• frequent urination
• extreme thirst
• excessive hunger
• sudden/unusual weight loss
• blurred vision
• cuts and bruises slow to heal
• genital infections
• tingling or numbness in hands or feet
• mood swings
• frequent headaches

Thank you Thyna for the info. I had Gestational Diabetes with both pregnancies, so I have to watch my weight. Because of this, there will be a good chance that I will be a Type 2 diabetic later in life. Also I was told that if my weight ever get up to 200 pounds or more, I will definately be a Type 2 diabetic. Diabetes runs heavily on my mother's side of the family, so that's another reason I have to be careful.

I'm so sorry you got it. My mom, dad, brother and sister all have it also. Only myself and my other sister don't so far. Thanks for the information.

I am also a type 2 diabetic. I was diagnosed back in May of 2005.
I'm on medication to increase my pancreas' insulin output as well as controlling with exercise and diet.

It's a pain in the a** to constantly have to plan your meals and not be able to eat the things you want when you want them. Casual eating is something I'll never take for granted again.

tell me about it
My hubby does the cooking and all the time he doesn't pay attention to the carbs. So for a while I was buying stuff to balance my meals out better...Until he started using my stuff for his snacks and not replace it for my meals. We get into arguements all the time about it.

A lot of diabetics think that they need to avoid all carbs but that is not true. complex carbohydrates do not increase the blood sugar as fast as simple ones since it takes some time for the body to brea those molecules down. So those types of carbs are better since they dont put as much stress on the pancreas to release a lot of insulin. portion control is also very important

we still need a certain amount of carbs in our diets. Depending on the meal (and the dietitian) it is recommended to have between 45 - 75 carbs (with two 15-20 carb snacks inbetween).

Some nights I've calculated the meals hubby serves up as having 100 carbs or more, not good, not good. Tonight wasn't too bad as he made up a ground beef and kraft dinner mixture (onion for flavor)
1/4 of a box is 40 carbs, I think he seved me about 1/3 of the mixture which is within range.

I'm a diabetic too, but Type I. I was diagnosed when I was nine. Thanks for pointing out in your info that Type I comes from the pancreas not producing insulin. So many people insult me by saying I have diabetes because I'm a little overweight. Well really, that's the common opinion that diabetes ONLY comes from being overweight, right? It's so rude.

its type 2 that is more commonly associated with obesity, but even then that isn't always the case

I was diagnosed on Wednesday of this week. They know its already PreDiabetes, but the numbers might be higher. I haven't had a chance to work on my diet yet, and due to some other issues, I can't exercise at the moment. I am just learning how to use my meter.

This kinda sucks...

yeah no kidding
At least with prediabetes they recommend learning to control it by diet more so than using pills...depending on the numbers that is

Those meters are fun aren't they xd
At least they are making them so you don't need as much blood. I hate having to p***k my finger all the time

I was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes summer of 2007. They started me on medication, which also helped me get pregnant... biggrin Luckily, thank the Lord, it didn't cause any problems during my pregnancy. As a matter of fact, my ob/gyn told me I could stop taking my meds all together. He was one that specializes with women that have diabetes. I just try to watch what I eat, and occasionally keep check on my sugar levels. So far, I've not had any problems. I can usually tell if my sugar is too high or too low without checking it.

She already told me if we can't keep the numbers under control soon she wants me on meds.

More pillz. xp

yeah not fun
My doctor put me on Metformin and Gliclazide because my numbers weren't going down fast enough for his liking (when I was first confirmed I was at 22 which is high for Canadian tests. Between 4-7 is normal)

But then my numbers were getting too low and I kept crashing so I'm now off the Gliclazide and my numbers are staying at around 9.
