As you can see from the quote above, the opening statement, Thoreau has said that laws can not make you a free person, only you can, so you must work for what you want, meaning the changing of laws. In the American Revolution, which lasted from 1775 to 1783, where many lives of valuable fathers, sons, brothers, uncles, friends, and lovers were lost, we Americans were fighting to gain our freedom and independce from our mother country, Great Britain. It was then that we decided that we were tired, exhausted, and fed up with the idea of taking and accepting orders from Britain and wrote the Declaration of Independence, with in it saying "in the Name, and by Authority of the good People of these Colonies, solemnly publish and declare, That these united Colonies are, and of Right ought to be Free and Independent States, that they are Absolved from all Allegiance to the British Crown, and that all political connection between them and the State of Great Britain, is and ought to be totally dissolved." This statement declared, or prcloaimed, if you prefer, that the people would no longer be following Britain's laws but becoming their own country, with their own constitution and own set of laws. By not following the law, set by Great Britian, we, the United States of America, who today has become a great country of freedom and independence, And shall forever remain independent thorough out the future of time, thanks to her posterity, have gained our freedom, because we fought for it, as proved by the American Revolution.

John Mucher never was or will be a free man. The law never gave him freedom. When he was taken in by the police he had already trapped himself with his cravings for women, loosing sight of what was truly important to him. he had lost all hope for freedom the minute he began molesting. Only a you can make yourself a free person. The law cant make you free, rather it makes every attempt to try and steal away that freedom. Living in a country where you've always been free, you may have forgotten this one single fact. Any freedom be it religous, racial, or social only you can obtain it. Do you think that the southern states of the U.S. just decided to give the blacks racial freedom out of the blue one day because it seemed like a nice thing to do? NO! It took nearly 100 years of resistance from the blacks and help from the north to reform the south. 100 years of hard work, impressive bravery, and unbreakable spirits until african americans were able to go where they wanted. To be able to sit in the front of a bus or walk into a building. There were laws that said that blacks should be treated as equals. Were they treated as equals before or after they fought for it with their civil disobedience? We also shouldnt forget religion. Was christianity widely excepted when it first was realized of did the ancient christians have to fight for the right to practice it when the angry roman masses began to crucifying them to appease their rulers? Some might say that once youve died or gone to jail their was no reason for you to give up your entire life just for that one belief, that one hope that one day you will be able to practice your belief out in the open loud and proud. However giving into fear of the reprecussions of your actions, is the way the gov't controls the masses. Are you free when your to afraid to speak out because if you do youll be reprimanded for it? In society one can never be considered absolutely free, the ones that try to change things in the gov't till the very end are the ones that ought to be though.
