Corvette is fastest of them all Going from zero to 60 mph in one second will make people stop and stare, but Rod Saboury need not drive his 2,400-horsepower, twin-turbo-charged Corvette that fast to grab attention. Sometimes, the Millers resident and National Hot Rod Association driver cruises along Carroll County's streets or pulls up into a McDonald's drive-through, and then heads turn - fixated on the Corvette's dragster-engine sound, fire-red exterior and hot-rod designs. "It's like driving a UFO on the highway," says Saboury, 58, whose 1963-model Corvette is widely regarded as the fastest street-legal car on the planet. The car so impressed the editors at Super Chevy magazine that the 35-year-old publication named Saboury's Corvette as its inaugural Car of the Year in its February issue. Then the Corvette reached the quarter-mile mark in 6.95 seconds at 210.54 mph - the fastest-ever recorded drag strip run by a street-legal car. Continued at link with video.

From the article, he's here in the US. I like how the guy drives the car so responsibly, that cops don't bother him at all. He also abhors street racing, and tries to get people to keep it on the track. The whole article is a great read.

Sure, it's cool... I dunno, something about muscle cars with thousands of horsepower doesn't strike me. It's all sort of pointless. If I wanted to go that fast and I had a hundred grand to spend, I'd purchase a rocket engine and strap the damn thing to my back. Doing that would surely be better in the corners, anyway.

Man I want to meet his engine builder.
Maybe he can do wonders for my little 2L.

I dunno, something about angry bees sliding around corners at slow speeds for show, slow economy cars with coffee cans, or frame rattling systems doesn't strike me. It's all sort of pointless. If I wanted to go that fast, I'd gut a Civic and set it up so that it's completly undrivable on the street... and still be 3-4 seconds slower. Or if I wanted to look that fast, I'd buy an AE86 or Silvia and slide around. Doing that would surely be better? razz You know I love you. smile

Man I HAVE to check this out on UTube. I'm not a fan of the hood design, but I'm very curious to see how he made the chassis take the beating.

Just watched the video, if he thinks 6 seconds of hard driving is "mentally and physically draining," he'd best not try circuit racing. rofl But kudos where they're due, its a fantastic machine for its application and IMO he should keep it on street tyres, keep it "the fastest street-legal car," and not try and go into another weight class. Its done its job, plain and simple. Would absolutely hate to see him have to take weight out of it in order to keep up with the race-only machinery.

Man thats a crazy machine right there. And there are cars not barely have 400 or 500 horsepower who struggle just to get 15mpg. Is it possible that it'll pass emissions and be street legal in this very strict state of California?
