For the past, oh god knows how many years, I've been having a hard time sleeping, now it did get worse after my father tried to break into the house about 5 years ago. But I just cant sleep well at night, and sleeping during the day is not an option for me. I want to know if someone has a way to help me sleep, without taking sleeping pills.
I have tried:
exercize
baths
warm milk
sleepy time tea
valerian
melatonin
cat n**
Anxiety pills(given by the idiot psychiatrist I was seeing-want to know why, pm me, its along story)

So, any advice would be loved greatly.

Well you have anxiety and Depression right? Maybe go to a psychologist and see what they can give? Or get ambien from a doctor? Either way, sometimes even though medication totally sucks, its the only option. Either that, or maybe you are in need of a bit of counciling... As in maybe a traumatic event has made it hard for you to sleep. Even if you dont remember it. Other than that you have tried pretty much all the self-help methods. So really those are the only two things i can think of - Get medication, or try counciling to see what they can do to help you.

Well unfortunately, the only counselors available to my age(17) are all idiots that I've already seen, the only psychiatrist that I could see is an idiot9even by my mothers books), plus she is dead set against sleeping pills. As for a traumatic event, there hasn't been any in my life, just ever since I was a child I had a hard time sleeping at night.
The place I live sucks for getting help, I'm waiting until i'm 18 to try seeing a new therapist, because the other one claimed my depression was because my mother smokes.

That's kinda weird that they have an age limit on it... Do they say why they have age limits? How long until you become eighteen? Besides, when you turn eighteen, your mother really has no options anymore on what goes into your body. Patient Doctor confidentiality rules like that.

So no trauma? Hmmm... Maybe you really have a chemical imbalance in your brain, preventing you from being able to fall asleep then. If that is the case, it really does suck.... Cause a lot of times it really does mean medication is needed, to retrain your brain to do stuff. Most times you do not need sleeping pills the rest of your life and they take you off them before you get too addicted.

As for depression because a parent smokes... Just, wow... That's not even a proven fact yet, i mean its being studied but its not proven so they arent supposed to use that as a fact.

Canada is weird that way. I'm 18 in may, but until then I am only legally allowed to see therapist trained to deal with 'children'. I was on melatonin, it was supposed to regulate the horomone which causes you to sleep, but it didn't work. I probably wont wind up doing anything like that, the last time I told my doctor about it, he said he could do noting unless I wanted to go out of province for a sleep study, when they have a set up for that in the city. My doctor is an idiot. But if this doesn't get better by 18, I'm going to see if he can give me the lowest dose possible so I can actually sleep well at night

Well sleep studies would probably help as well... Although I'm the type of person who wouldn't sleep if i knew i had a sleep study going on. I'm awesome like that.

Really, its your choice on pills/medication. Although i do know they have some that can actually work with your brain, to train your brain to create the chemicals that makes you fall asleep... I dont really know though, my insomnia was and is always linked with my anxiety/depression/panic disorder... Maybe yours is linked to your anxiety too?

My insomnia got worse as my depression got worse. It got to the point where the voices kept me up all night or even woke me up, screaming at me to kill myself. If you get the depression competently treated, I have no doubt your insomnia won't last.

Sleep is a really bizzare area of life. There's been mountains of research done into it, but still very little is known. One thing that is known, it's essential...Sleep loss can cause all kinds of mental and physical problems. However because of the lack of real knowledge behind sleep, and also why some people are asleep before their head hits the pillow and others lie awake for hours struggling, medication and therapy can be very hit and miss.

In my experience sleeping problems become worse, because you have a sleeping problem. It's a catch 22 situation, because you stress over sleep, you're less likely to sleep. Then you start to feel like that's the way you're going to be forever and it's never going to get better, and that in turn depresses you and so on and so forth.

You probably knew all that already, personally I think the best thing to do is to just stop 'trying' to sleep. Don't go to bed until you are physically exhausted. It's really tough at first, because you're sitting there at 4 in the morning, and you don't feel tired, but you need to sleep because you have to be up at 6 or 7...But you just have to keep pushing. For about a month your sleep is all over the place, but your body does have it's own body clock, eventually it snaps into place.

That's what I'm doing right now, and it is really hard, especially when you've been awake for over 20 hours because you had to go to college, but when you come home after a day like that and get to bed, sleep is no longer the enemy.

That felt kind of rambly, but I hope it helped in some way. Basically what I was saying is, psycologically, sleep becomes a stress trigger and you have to try and get rid of that...

Well, if you want to go to sleep at ten, I guess you should tuck yourself in at eight~?

Actually you should look into the sleep study; ideally if you snore. You could have mild sleep apnea. I need to go to this study as well, even if I don't like it I think sleep and you know... breathing.. is a little more important. But if you don't snore, don't know what to tell you, I don't see anything that would cause that, besides the depression. What's your caffeine intake? Eating schedule? Also you aren't diagnosed as ADD or ADHD are you?

I don't snore, my caffine intake is occasional, and I dont have ADD or ADHD, my eating schedual..its spastic, to be honest. I do know that I don't have anything wrong with my Thyroid glands, so that's not it, I'm going to start trying 5HTP, and see if that helps

Eatting late at night can keep you up, because your body is still digesting, on top of what your doing it would be smart to get an eating schedule and don't eat... 3-4 hrs before you sleep.

Well, as an update, the 5HTP makes me vomit. I sleep well for 4 hours then wake up and vomit for about 5-10 minutes. So I'm still looking for advice.

5HTP is not really an insomnia medication for some people... I know it's advertised as helping but really, some people are sensitive to it in the sense it gives them insomnia. Personally I love 5HTP. That's pretty weird that it makes you vomit though.

How long til you turn eighteen again? I still think that medication is a good route.

Also, if you stay up for 24 hours straight without sleeping, sometimes it will reset your biological clock.

Lets see... Sleeping pills are sold in stores, you could try those. If you have depression, getting your depression in check would also help.

I am sure I could think of more if those dont help.
