I was just wondering how sleep effects Bipolar disorder, because I was all manic, and then I didn't get much sleep, so I cycled down, and I'm not sure if it has anything to do with sleep......does it?

I think I cycle anyway. When you're manic, you don't need much sleep. I was manic once, and went 72 hours, sleeping only 3 hours out of that. It was weird, but I just didn't need the sleep. Then I passed out, but I didn't cycle after that.

Haha, yeah, that happened to me in august. But I didn't realize what it was then, also, iw as drinking a lot of coke.

My mom has BP too, and one time she mentioned that sleeping can helpm regulate things more, hmm...

Problem is, when I'm REALLY manic, I CAN'T sleep. Can't even lie still. So, I sit on the comp and type on Gaia.

I was manic for about a month: I would generally go about 4-5 days, sleeping maybe two hours a day at max, then get in about ten hours on the sixth day, then just start all over again.

My therapist says that being manic is a lot like being on speed, it just has you going so fast, you can't quite stop to do anything, like eat or sleep. I usually get a lot done during these periods, so I appreciate it.

However, when I'm down, I'll spend the entire day laying in bed, staring at my ceiling. Sometimes I'll get up, but I'm usually so tired that I lay down on my couch and sleep, or I'll skip classes at school to doze in my car. It's kind of a trade-off, either I don't sleep or I sleep too much. To answer your question, it's not that sleep affects bipolarity, but that bipolarity affects sleep.

ive been an insomniac for as long as i can remmeber, and i didnt think about it untill just now, but the more depressed i was , the less sleep i got oO; some poepel are the otehr way around, when terye really down, all tehy want to do is sleep, ebcuase when tehrye asleep tehy dont have to face reality. more recently i have umi ^^ and ive actually been sleeping a little, so i guess it has a direct affect on sleep patterns

I went without sleep for about a week once, and that was when I was at my worst... I'm not sure about 'cycles' like you guys keep talking about. But after that happened, I forced myself to get about 5 hours of sleep and no more, felt like it was all I needed... I was so overtired...

When I'm at my most deressed I find that less sleep helps...I guess because I do so much work, and talking in the hours I should be sleeping that I get less stressed about the work I need to do,or the secrets I'm holding, and also cos the tirder I am, the less energy I have to spend on being miserrable and manic.

xd

Lots of sleep makes me feel ill, and getting the "right" amount of sleep, like when people tell you to get 8/9 hours a night....well that makes me tirder, but in a bad way cos I'm still having less time awake to sort things out.

If that made ANY sense...

Same.

Most nights I get to sleep at 11pm and then wake up at 4am because I seem to go manic then.

Well, I get maybe 3 hours of sleep anyway, and it just makes me more and more hyped. However, for my ex-step-dad, sleep deprivation made him cranky and abusive. I guess it just matters on the person and how they choose to use it.
