i have been thinking this for ages
go back in time and look at the wars that have been fought in the world 85-90% has been coz of one reason religion or religious dispute there is only one way to achive world peace and that will never happen and that is to abolish all religion that way there won't be any arrguements any fights no more diputes whos right or wrong and everyone can get along together
but thats a fools dream sure a few religions don't beleave in violance but there will be another religion that don't that like how they do stuff

heart ninja Thwak I have to disagree with you, and to my chargin I have to agree with english. Look people as a whole are a selfish bunch. Call it original sin or whatever you want people will always want more. They want everyone to agree with them, they want a better yard than their neighbor, they want a bigger pay check than their spouse. It's because of this selfish desire that most wars are fought.
Land, Money, Women, Power, Religion have all been things wars have been fought over. Funny thing about all of these things is that Only Religion has been used as a scape goat for the others. I guarentee that God didn't come down from on high and decree that there should be two popes causing war between people of the supposed same faith. (thank goodness I'm not catholic lol) It was a dispute over power and who would have it. I hope you see what I'm saying. Even if no one believed in any religion then there would still be war because the Robinsons still have something you want. ninja heart

i have often seen this said, but never seen it proved.
it seems to express a popular humanist slander against all belief.
war in my opinion is made for money and power. if religion is handy to justify it, it is used, but it is not the primary motive.
if religion is not handy, as in nazi germany (where hitler replaced images of Christ in churches with his own picture), or communist russia or china, ideology takes the place of religion.
in my native scotland, neighbors made a habit of beating each other up as often as possible just to steal a few sheep, and they were all presbyterian.
no, not the sheep.

Chessiejo brings up another good point. I'll further discuss it by using the example of the hatemongering Westboro Baptist Church (who have recently been banned from the country of England!)
This group claims that their actions are in line with Biblical law and that they are performing their God's will. The following excerpt is taken from the Wikipedia article about their organization.Quote: In 2005, the British TV network British Sky Broadcasting produced an investigative piece using hidden cameras, which included footage of two of Phelps' granddaughters, Libby and Jael.[107] In the testimonial, Libby and Jael explain that they hope and pray that no one outside of Westboro becomes "elect,"[107] because they want everyone else in the world to die horribly and burn in Hell,[107] and that even if they did not believe their actions were dictated by God, they would still do and enjoy them anyway.[107] The interview was not part of the hidden camera segment, and although much of the footage was taken without the knowledge or permission of Westboro, the church maintains a link to the entire report on its website. This pretty much proves that they are simply using their religion as an excuse to be hateful towards people that their Scriptures command them to love. Like I said earlier: the religions aren't the problem (be honest: how many Christians do you know who act like this?); the corrupt followers of them are.

From the Bolshevik Revolution to the fall of the Soviet Union, the varying forms of communism ranging from Leninism to Stalinist, have contributed to the deaths of hundreds of millions of those under Soviet rule. These fatalities ranged from starvation to mass executions. Many Russians that lived under the Iron Curtain tell of unspeakable atrocities and violent suppression of free speech.
All these horrors come from styles of centralized government that not only frown upon religion, but regarded it as inferior and punished believers harshly.
So:
1) Religion doesn't cause wars. Politics IN religion did during one point in history. Now it's simply politics. Power in politics. It's always been about power, and it always will.
2) If religion was to ceased to be one day, people WILL find something else to kill each other over. That's just human nature, a leftover evolutionary trait that is very hard to purge.

There's a lot of truth in your statements, Mike. I think politics and religion are two areas of thought which make people prone to disagreements and sometimes war, but it is true that without these constructs, people would find something else to fight over.
The problem with religion and war arises when different groups start thinking that, due to their beliefs, they are morally superiour or that their beliefs entitle them to something 'extra.' If two of these groups happen to come up against each other on an issue, it can often be like a ticking time bomb. :/ Very unfortunate that people have such a problem in this sort of area.
