Whilst it might not have been the first one you watched, but was there a movie, OVA or series that made you think 'Yes, this is for me, I want to see more anime!' during or after it and you knew you were an anime fan?

For me, it was during one of the UK scifi channel's anime specials back in 2000-2001. I'd caught little bits and pieces here and there of random anime movies before without taking much notice, but then curious about the title, watched the first episode of a short series from the late 80's called Dominion Tank Police. I LOVED the cyberpunk feel to it (as would befit a series I later found to be created by the great Masamune Shirow), the OTT comedy and music and inspired by that, started watching more and more and brings to me to know where i've watched dozens of series', OVAs and movies since then.

I was actually hooked on anime before I had ever heard the term. I just though of it as detailed cartoons. XD That's because when I was little I would always flip to Cartoon Network and watch Toonami after school. About the same time I also discovered the Pokemon series.

So I guess the series that got me hooked were Pokemon, Sailor Moon, and DBZ. XD

Yeah, without knowing it i'd pretty much grown up on anime, because a lot of my fave cartoons in the 80's such as Battle of the Planets, Jayce and The Wheeled Warriors, Seven Cities of Gold, Ulysses 31 and even the Real Ghostbusters turned out to be either japanese made or joint US-Japan productions. I was like O_O when I saw an ep of the Real Ghostbusters for the first time in years a little while back whilst I was flicking around on Youtube and saw a whole host of Japanese names flood by on the credits. xD

well, i spose it had to have been pokemon that sparked that teeny bit of interest and the digimon totally rawked my world, but it wasnt untill later that i realised i had been watching anime a lot of my life. I watched a huge amount of cardcaptors and got re-hooked on it a while ago!
so i suppose that it was really cardcaptors that did it for me!
(note: i called them "Japanese cartoons" untill only about 4 years ago sweatdrop )

Oooh... do I have to?
All right. It was Gundam Wing and Dragonball Z.
My brother had tons of VHS tapes of anime, like Dominion and Ghost in the Shell. We watched Street Fighter, Tekken and Akira but it wasn't until Toonami started showing anime that I really got sucked in.

actually, the animes that hooked me are still in my life in some way or other, i just realised! surprised
i watch Tsubasa, which has the same characters as cardcapters and is also by CLAMP, i watch digimon savers (four seasons later than the original) and i do catch the odd pokemon every now and again (though it's not as good anymore...)

Yup, same with me, mattzere. Most of the ones that started me off, I still re-watch on a regular basis. The first three full series' I was able to watch; Outlaw Star, Escaflowne and Fruits Basket still remain pretty close to my heart after five years.

I think Pokemon would be the very first, but, we kinda just ventured on the internet for some stuff, didn't we? And just kinda just discovered more from there. That's where Froggy Mix came from afterall, that bizarre French band.

Ahhhhh, Akira! I need to watch that again.
For me it was Sailor Moon but I forgot about anime after Toonami was pulled until I saw Spirited Away and FELL IN LOVE and wanted to know everything I possibly could about Miyazaki and others.
To this day I still love Sailor Moon. Subs of course. biggrin
