ok, some truely beautiful art...
well, obviously studio ghibli are the main ones to watch if you want breathtaking anime of many different styles, but does anyone find anything (anyone) else outstandingly awesome?

If we're talking about art style, the Ghibli is far up there, yes. I also really like the look of of Seirei no Moribito and Kamichu!. Seirei no Moribito's fight scenes are so well-made and lovely... but it's hard to get something prettier than Ghibli.
I don't really favour a creator so to speak, though.

Aaah, Last Exile... it is very atmospheric, that's true. I watched a bit of that, but, I never finished it. Got into a slow patch and really couldn't be bothered to continue. Urgh, that happens so often...
But yes!
That's very nice to look at.

I tend to favor the more realistic anime styles like you see with Ghibli or another good example is Death Note.
I do, however have a soft spot for shojo anime, although I am picky about it. I don't like it when every character has tiny noses and super shiny eyes that take up half their face. =.= When done at a happy medium, though I think shojo anime is amazingly beautiful. At the moment though, the only examples I can think of are of manga series that were never made into anime.

Huh... I can't say much for anime... I loved the art of the Count Cain series and the Godchild series, both done by Kaori Yuki. Both of the beginnings were quite odd as it seemed that she'd forgotten all perspective, and they're only manga, not anime, but the art is as beautiful as the story is dramatic. They're dark but wonderful. I have to agree with Green; Death Note is another good series to look to. I have a soft spot for all of Hayao Miyazaki's work; it is simply amazing. If the characters are a little plain in design (which, in my opinion, is a boon), everything else is detailed down to the last nanometer.

I like Juuni Kokki / The Twelve Kingdoms.
It was based on light novels so the quality of world design was always gonna be there. But it, like Last Exile (in my opinion), are really nice to look at.

Twelve Kingdoms is good, Queenie.
There's also Scrapped Princess which was very nice in graphics, but, sadly lacking in most everything else, in my opinion. Dx

Studio Ghibli all the way. Particularly the ones by Miyazaki.
Hayao Miyazaki is a genius at what he does.
His attention for detail is impeccable and his storytelling is amazing.
It's a wonder he's not more popular in the states, because even people who don't like anime can easily love Miyazaki.
As far as anime that tantalizes the optics, I've always loved Ah! My Goddess: The Movie.
It's just beautiful from beginning to end.
And you don't even have to know anything about the series to be able to enjoy the movie.
I love movies like that. Don't you?
Also, Vampire HUnter D: Bloodlust comes to mind........ Not sure why.
Maybe because that movie has a good sense of detail too.
The animation is beautiful in a creepy sort of way.

It's one of my favorite anime movies, though I don't recommend it for anyone with a weak constitution. =P

Now that I've said that though... it brings me something that's always fascinated me that I've never watched. Serial Experiments Lain. Something about the art style just fascinates me - it's realistic, creepy and yet... nice sometimes. Especially when Lain smiles - when she does, it seems like she means it because it's so rare and cute-looking.
I also like the Girl Who Leapt Through Time's appearance despite never seeing the movie though I do intend to.

Yes, Professor, i do love movies. And studio Ghibly. i love Castle in the sky. and nausica, vally of the wind (is that what it's called, i dont remember), and kiki's delivery service!
and i really wanna see 'The Girl Who Leapt Through Time' too Primmy!

I don't have a clue what Studio Ghibli is but personally, I prefer cute Anime, or Anime that contain romance while the main story is about something else. I'm usually more interested in the story than in the art, but of course a good story well-drawn is always cool ^^
My favorite Anime are Pokemon, Full Moon wo Sagashite, Fruits Basket, Inuyasha, Pita Ten, Rurouni Kenshin.
