It's a well known fact that spider monkeys don't get along well with B'alam. This rust colored monkey came across this idol, and is very confused about what to do now. The monkey knows B'alam cubs are drawn to these magical idols. Would the monkey bring it to it's family? Or would the monkey keep the idol in secrecy? Or perhaps try to find the true parents of the idol? You decide!

You may only enter the contest once! And you may not edit your posts, aside from spelling. The winner will be decided based on creativity, not how well you can write. The winner keeps both the monkey and the idol, unless they feel they want to give one or the other away to someone.

I'd prefer that the winner keeps the plot they wrote for their entry for these two for later roleplaying purposes. You won't know the idol's gender until the cub arrives!

Monkey's Name: Michelena
Monkey's Gender: Female
Monkey's Personality: Michelena is rather a caring young female. She wouldn't care if everyone objected to anything she did if it meant saving a little baby. She's also a rather sly female monkey. She can always get her way, in a rather harmless way. Talking her way out of anything.
Entry:

It was a cold morning, foggy and rather unpleasant. Easy to lose one's self or something dear to you. She moved slowly about the ground instead of the trees. In case someone had lost their meal. Easy to get food without any work that way. The light of the sun had just started coming up not too long ago, making the place rather gloomy and almost like it was from a horror story. Though, Michelena knew there was no danger where she was. At least, with what time it was. Her tail hung high in the air like a back words question mark.

She be gain to walk on all fours, stopped, picked up some things to get a bitter look at it, then tossed it aside and moved on. She wanted excitement, something to happen to change everything in her life. Everyone around were all a bit dull, and not really fun to hang out with. The fog was so thick, you could almost not see anything in front of you.

And with Michelena's attention on something else, she ran smack into something. Falling to the floor, she rubbed her head with one hand and placed the other on a something wooden. She knocked on it with that hand before looking at it. She didn't want to look at it, she was sure of what it was already. Taking her other hand from her head she felt it, then decided to look at it. It was exactly what she thought it was.... A idol.

She looked around it, by circling it. The fog made everything impossible to see. It'd only last a few hours longer. She sat down, placing one hand under her chin to sit there and think of what she was going to do. She couldn't leave it here, and she couldn't go off trying to find it's parents. It probably was left on purpose. She had to take it. Not that anyone would really like this, and would probably cause her to be a outcast, but she didn't care. It was to be baby for heaven sakes!

It was decided, she was going to take it back and raise it, will let all to see. She'd teach it not to eat them. Then the others would see that they were quite friendly.

Monkey's Name: Catlipoca
Monkey's Gender: Female
Monkey's Personality: Quiet, and thoughtful. Catlipoca rarely acts without considering the results of her actions thoroughly first. She is intelligent, and kind, but never lets the kindness overwhelm her so that she acts thoughtlessly.
Entry:
Catlipoca sat quietly, staring at the tan colored idol, with the green gems. It was very pretty, but she knew what she had found. She also knew she didn't know what to do with the idol. A baby B'alam would come soon, and she didn't think she could handle that. At the same time, she couldn't just abandon the idol, the cub might end up lost, hurt, or worse. Catlipoca sighed. Why did it have to be HER that found it? Her brother would have had no issues making up his mind!
Catlipoca moved closer to it, and with great care, she picked the idol up, and studied it. Finally, she set it back down, and hunted around, until she'd gathered several vines together and then tied them around the idol. She used the vines to carry the idol, making it easier for her to move, creating a pack she could carry on her back, and tied it there. This way, she had her hands and tail free. She climbed up, into a tree, and began to head off, her orange-brown eyes searching the ground and the branches around and below her, to see if she could find any signs of adult B'alam.
Her decision, which she had come to, after much deliberation, was to try to find the parents. If she failed at that, she'd take them to the place where she'd seen many B'alam gather, along with the humans. She knew she'd be able to find some one to care for it. Well... She hoped, at least. And that way she'd not have to worry about what to do with it. She also hoped no one would try to claim she'd stolen it.
She sighed. It was heavy, but as she continued, she knew she had to finish. Even if she didn't get to the place she sought today, she'd care for the idol until she did, so as to be sure that it would, at the least, be safe from the depredations of any being in the woods that would wish it ill. Or steal it's shinies. Catlipoca was determined to do right by this idol. She'd found it, it was her duty.

Monkey's Name: Aran
Note: The name Aran is pronounced like Aaron, and is derived from the main order of arachnids, Araneae. This name comes from the Ashanti trickster Anansi, as well as fact that he is a spider monkey. The spider thing is a bit coincidental, really.
Monkey's Gender: male
Monkey's Personality: Scrappy and tricksy, Aran delights in causing mischief and mayhem. He'll try anything at least once, if only to see if it could be useful for future schemes.
Entry:

Aran swung easily from branch to branch, cruising through the lowest level of the canopy and idly looking around for something to do. He wasn't used to being this bored, since he usually filled his days with little adventures and mad dashes through the forest trying to run away from annoyed colony mates. However, his family had finally become fed up with him, and had run him off to cause mischief somewhere else. He wasn't too worried though, because he was confident they would take him back after they'd had a chance to realize how much they missed him. For now though, Aran was alone. And bored!

Suddenly there was a flash from below, on the forest floor. Aran stopped abruptly, and hung by one hand to the branch he had just grabbed, swaying back and forth. He pinpointed the source of the flash, and saw what looked like a wooden carving set with stones. Whatever it was, it was certainly shiny and interesting. A few rustled leaves later and with a little help from gravity, Aran couched on the floor of the jungle, a few feet away from the sparkly thing. His eyes widened as he realized exactly what it was.

A B'alam idol! The little monkey tensed and quickly scanned the undergrowth for the idol's parents. After a few minutes of sitting paralyzed in the silence, Aran decided that the parents weren't around. He wondered why this idol was sitting all alone on the ground, completely out in the open where anything could happen to it. Then he wondered why he even cared. Why should he? He was a spider monkey, and this was a big cat. A big cat that would grow up and probably try to eat him one day!

Aran scoffed at the idol and went to scamper back up to the canopy and look for something less dangerous to entertain him. Halfway up a tree, however, he stopped as he realized something. This cat might be dangerous as an adult, but as an idol it was completely harmless. If he raised the cub himself, though, he could teach it to do anything! He could even teach it to be just like him, and they could go on adventures together! That way, even if his family ran him out of the colony, he would still have a friend to talk to, and someone to protect him from predators.

His mind suddenly made up, Aran dropped back to the ground and approached the idol. It really was pretty, with little green eyes that flashed and flickered in the sunlight in what seemed to be a playful manner. Aran's eyes shifted quickly from left to right, scanning for danger again. Seeing no angry mother B'alam nearby, Aran picked up the idol. He swung silently back up into the trees, and disappeared into the shadows of the canopy.

Thanks heart

Kaeleira

Monkey's Name: Batz
[As in Han-Batz, one of the Monkey Twins of Mayan mythology. They were tricked and replaced by their half brothers, the Hero Twins, and became monkeys.]
Monkey's Gender: Male
Monkey's Personality: Vengeful
Entry: He hadn't wanted to be freed, you know. As a caged and prodded "pet" Batz had been given the good life. The Royal Treatment, one might say. What could you expect, though? Being the daughter of a small human tribe's cheiftan. War leader. He'd heard the large man called both. It hadn't mattered to him, though. He was given fresh fruit, free reign as long as he came when the girl called, and lots of activity. The Girl was just as active and busy as he was, and though it had taken him time to sleep at night she had made it worth it with the warm cuddles she had given him.

That had all changed when her father had managed to collect one of the blasted cat idols. Those pesky B'alam, they got in the way of everything and this was no exception. Soon after the idol had been given to The Girl, a small cat cub had found it's way to it and settled in. As if it had belonged there all along! In Batz's home! At first they'd been expected to get along, but as the filthy bipedal encroached on sleepy time with The Girl. As soon as it took away the monkey's daytime walks, and constant supply of fresh water... It had been war.

Of course, Batz knew from living with the humans that the first to strike was the quickest to win. What he didn't know was that the same humans did not believe that when it came to animals. Thus, he had found himself being tied to a tree far from the home he'd come to know and love. They'd made it intentionally loose, that he could free himself eventually; but, they'd also made it tight enough that they'd be long gone. He could go find them, but it would take a long time and they'd just go through the leaving process all over again. He was far too lazy a monkey for that.

At least they'd left him by a small river.

It was as he was taking a timid sip of the moving water that he felt the thump on his head. Tossing the solid object that he struck him to the side, he first nursed his slightly throbbing noggin. It had hurt, and at the moment he hadn't wanted to inspect whatever it was. Anything that came down rushing water to hit him in the head could be of no use, or good.

He was right.

Once Batz was satisfied that he was in no danger of dying from head damage, he turned to curiously peer at what had hit him; and much to his dismay, it was another one of those damn idols. Closing his eyes, he pinched the bridge of his nose with his long monkey fingers. A sign right there, he thought, that he was of superiority to the mewling furballs. Opposable thumbs.

Grinding his teeth, he hefted the idol and chucked it as far away from him as he possibly could with his small arms. He didn't want to look at it or share space with it, but he didn't really feel like leaving his safe spot either. For fear of losing it. With yet another stroke of misfortune, the idol hit a tree, ricocheted off of a rock, and landed at Batz's feet. With seething anger, he kicked it away from him.

It stayed where it landed well past nightfall.

As the night grew cold, and strange noises rose from the grounds around the tree the small monkey had perched himself in, he found himself wishing more and more that he had something warm to wrap himself around. Eyes wide, he contemplated the unthinkable. If he held onto the B'alam idol, maybe the cub it belonged to would think it belonged to him. If it thought that, maybe it would want to snuggle with him. Then maybe he could use it to keep warm!

Nothing made Batz more happy than to think that he could use the accursed cat for his own benefit, and with a gleeful little clap, he peered down at the ground where he'd left the idol. But it wasn't there! Panic welled in the spider monkey's haert and he started to glance frantically about. Where was it? What could have happened? It was during the frantic searching that he spotted them...

Two glowing eyes staring at him from among the branches that he had made into his make-shift home and bed. A low rumble poured out of it's throat, making Batz tremble with fear. He held out his hand, like he'd seen The Girl do with the cat that had replaced him, and waited.

And waited some more.

After what had seemed like an eternity, a small tongue lashed itself warmly against the monkey's hand and the furry abomination padded stealthily towards Batz. It curled around him, the moneky realised it was purring, and he smiled. He had no idea what he was going to do with the awful thing, but for now it made one terrific bed.

So... I hope this isn't too long. I didn't see a word limit so I didn't worry until I had stopped writing. xDDD

Monkey's Name: Yapi’ta
Monkey's Gender: Female
Monkey's Personality: Solitary. She doesn’t like others of her kind, even others in general. And she especially does not like B’alam. Nasty little felines. She’s not a very agreeable sort, tending to nag those around her whenever she gets the chance. Easily irritable. Very. Easily. Irritable. She doesn’t take crap from anyone, preferring instead to dish it out herself. Needless to say, she doesn’t have many friends…
Entry:

A soft light slid through the dense tropical canopy, casting musky light on lush greens and browns of every shade that grew silently on the ground floor. A russet primate slithered down the trunk of the massive palm, a line creased her brow in concentration. She stepped lightly onto the ground, listening for the sounds of danger. Many a monkey had fallen prey to the B’alam for not looking where they stepped. Monkeys ruled the trees, but here, where the soil was moist and soft, the kings of the jungle stalked silently. But nothing reached her waiting ears now. And so, she turned her mind to more important matters. Like, bananas. Bananananananananana. Where art thou bananas? Yapi’ta searched into the hollowed tree trunk with her sensitive fingertips. Mulchy leaves, degraded and soft, as she stirred them up a musky smell reached her nose. Just the leaves. That was it. Nothing else. Pfffft. Where did they go? Her stash of silky green plantains, fresh off the vine. The decomposing leaves aged them just right, brought out the flavor. De-lish. And no one liked them more than herself, except perhaps the Damien brothers. Oh. Duuuuuuh. Those rats! Who else knew where her secret tree nook was? Who else dared to confront her and risk her wrath?

One guess. And no, it wasn’t the lazy butt of a sloth that lived three trees down.

On cue, mischievous giggling filled the air. Yapi whirled, stony amber gaze probing the branches and shadows for signs of the culprits. There! A great Kapok towered above to her right, with a feathery treetop that seemed to pierce the sky itself. In one of the lower branches, in the shadow of the massive trunk, two pairs of glittering yellow eyes peered back at her. “Why? My bananas? I’m going to get you, brats!” Yapi bounced forward a few steps, chittering angrily under her breath. Above her, the Damien brothers whispered between themselves. Alask, the older of the two, thumped a closed fist against the trunk. Loud enough to get Yapi’s attention. “How about a trade then, Yapi? Your bananas for something of ours? What can you lose now? After all, your bananas have long since filled our stomachs!” Above her came a loud laughter, hooting. Yapi growled slowly, grinding her teeth together. Something was up. It wasn’t like Alask and Yuchi to give anything for what they had stolen. But something was better than nothing. “Fine. And it’s Yapi’ta to you.” She said slowly, eyes narrowed warily. With a another impish laugh, Alask pushed something off the branch. The small dark shape plummeted through the air, and Yapi reached out to catch it. It hit her arms with a painful jolt, before she let it slip through her fingers. Oh no. No no no. “Alask! You pea-brain, what have you done?!” Sitting there, before her, was an idol. Of the B’alam variety. Beneath her russet fur, Yapi paled.

The sun was lower in the sky, the light that filtered through the trees taking on the flaming tinge of dusk. Yapi trudged along, dragging the idol behind her upside down, its face digging into the soil. There was a small chip in one of the fiery emerald gems from a fit of anger when she had throw it. But she hadn’t the strength to do it now. Today hadn’t gone as planned. Not even close. Her bananas gone. A B’alam idol in her care. She didn’t think she could get much worse. In front of her, Yapi noticed a inviting display of shimmering light. Light, a lotof it, meant no trees. No trees this deep into the forest, this far away from the tree cutting men, meant a cliff. A chance. Yapi bounced forward, grasping the idol in her long fingers. Suddenly, the trees were all behind her. Before her, a sheer dropoff. Steadying her balance, Yapi reached out and held the idol over the brink. It looked so forlorn, so small, hanging there. “Look, it’s not me. It’s you. I don’t have to have a little meat-grubber following me around the rest of my life. I don’t want it. I live alone. I’ve always lived alone! And that isn’t gonna change.” But still, Yapi couldn’t let go. And eventually, she backed away form the cliff and continued her trek, dragging the idol behind her.

The next morning, she found that instead of an idol, she was curled around a small bundle of fur. She chittered uncomfortably, and stepped away. The cub woke, turned it large eyes on her. “Ma. Mama ma ma.” It murmured, soft voice thick with sleep. Yapi’ta growled softly, picking the cub up, shaking her head. “Not mama. Yapi’ta. And don’t you forget it.” The cub blinked, and turned it’s head. “Tata. Tata mama!” Yapi sighed. This was so not worth the bananas.

Monkey's Name: Yem'po
Monkey's Gender: Male
Monkey's Personality: Curious
Entry:

His paws shaking, Yem'po brushed off the last clinging remnants of forest-floor debris from the misshapen, (and apparently oddly coloured) rock that he had been using as a stepping-stone to reach the fruit on the overhanging tree. The sticky wet leaves fell away, and he looked down with an expression halfway between amazed and disgusted. Of all the things to find, not a neat human thingie, not a metal something or another from a passing traveler, but one of those darn cat-statue-things.

His day had stated off ordinarily enough, leaving his chosen crook of branches to find something to eat for his morning meal, and he had gone off to the west, down away from the hills instead of up toward them as he usually did. He wasn't sure why, everyone else went to the grove of trees up in the hills, but for some reason he hadn't want to go with the group today. After far more searching than it really should have taken, he had stumbled across a tree hanging with his favourite kind of fruits, the kind of tangy ones with pink skins. Excited, he had hopped op on a small rock, and used it as a jumping spot to get into the tree's low branches. He had just taken a great big bite out of a huge, burstingly-ripe fruit, when he looked back down. The spot where he'd stepped was... shiny? Rocks weren't shiny the last time he looked...

He hopped down and took a closer look, flicking off some leaves, and the rock began to take on an uncomfortably familiar shape. Aww cripes, what was he going to do now? These things attracted those darn big cats! Well, little versions of the cats, anyway, and the adults were insanely protective of them! He was absolutely sure he was going to be eaten in the next few seconds, that had to be why there was still so much fruit on that tree, everyone that came to eat it got eaten!

... After a few moments passed with no sign of him becoming some B'alam's snack, he decided that maybe the best thing he could do was clean it off, and maybe find a name on it? And so he started brushing at the leaves that were clinging to it in the way that wet vegetation is wont to. After the leaves were gone to his satisfaction, he stopped messing with it, and stepped back to take a long, careful look. Blast, no sign of a 'hello, my name is' tag on this one. He scampered back up the side of the tree into the low branches, and sat to ponder his problem. If this thing spawned a little B'alam, the first thing he was going to get was eaten, he was sure, either by the little one, or by the big one that would undoubtably come to find it. So he had to get rid of it, and fast!

How to do it? He mulled that question over as well. He could toss it in a river... or perhaps bury it in a deep hole! After a bit he discarded both of those plans, mainly because they both had the same critical flaw. He was still fairly sure that SOMEONE was watching him, and if he tried to do something to hurt the statue-cat-thing, he was almost surely as good as eaten. Perhaps... perhaps the best thing to do was give it back, then? He swung back down, using his tail to flip over the branch he was on, and flip to the ground. Yes, that was almost certainly the best idea! And the humans were on good terms with those cats, and didn't really try to eat his kind much, so why not give it to one of them?

He laughed, a great weight having lifted from his shoulders when he figured it out, and he wrapped both arms and his tail around the statue, giving a mighty heave to get it off the ground. He managed almost three staggering, heavily-weighted steps before he fell over, but he was determined to get this over and done, so he heaved it up again and kept trying. After a few more flops and crashes, he finally got the hang of keeping the surprisingly-light statue balanced about right, and he headed down the hills farther, going to the little plume of smoke in the valley that he knew marked the spot with the humans. Surely they could do something with this cat-rock-thingy, and get it away from him!
