Summary: ‘They met by chance. It was a dark and stormy night when Prince Kai stopped at an inn during his travel. The tavern wench who served him kept her head down, and when she looked up, a veil covered her face. He was very intrigued by this girl, who’s name was Allegria. He fell in love with this girl, and he wanted to marry her. But would she accept his offer? His love?’

Young Prince Varekai Theodore von Slyson was traveling back to his kingdom after a long and arduous journey from the neighboring kingdom. There were dark clouds overhead, and a storm had picked up quickly. He took refuge at a small inn on the side of the road for the night. Before going to bed that night, he went to the tavern/bar area of the inn and ordered some honey cakes. The cook boasted that they were the best in the land, best eaten hot with a cup of milk. The girl who brought him his cakes was intriguing to him, wearing all black clothes, yet her skin was paler than pale. The strangest thing about her was that she hid her face behind a black veil. She set the cakes on the table in front of him, and poured some milk into his cup.
“Thank you very much.” he said.
“Please enjoy your food. If you need anything don’t hesitate to ask.” she calmly replied.
“Actually, I would like something, if you don’t mind.”
“And what is that, sir?”
“What’s your name?”
“Allegria. Allegria Dante Calaway.”
“I like that name. I’m Varekai Theodore von Slyson. Call me Kai.”
“You aren’t going to mock me?”
“Why would I mock you?”
“My middle name. It’s a man’s name. Dante.”
“That’s no reason to mock you. You’re a very nice girl.” He smiled sweetly at her.
“Thank you. I think you should be eating those cakes before they lose their flavor.”
“Will I see you later?”
“Someone has to come and pick up the tray.” she laughed. He chuckled along with her. He looked at the spot on the veil where her face should have been and smiled. A male customer began complaining his food was late, and she rushed off. He took a bite out of one of the cakes, and it was very sweet. He took a drink of milk to counteract it, and it was the best thing he had tasted. He savored every bite, down to the last crumb. As if on cue, the minute he finished, she came over to him.
“My compliments to the chef. And my compliments to you as well.”
“The chef greatly appreciates your compliments. And why are you complimenting me?”
“It takes great skill to serve food in a place like this. There are many demanding people here.”
“When you do it since childhood, you get used to it.”
“Why don’t you come with me when I leave tomorrow? I would greatly appreciate it if you came. That is if you want to.” Her mother came swooping up to the table, and introduced herself.
“Hello. I am Quincie Lavender Calaway. I am Allegria’s mother, and co-owner of this inn. It’s a pleasure to meet you, your majesty.”
“Please, Mrs. Calaway, call me Kai.”
“So is there anything at all I can do for you?”
“Yes, I was wondering if Allegria might like to accompany me back to my castle tomorrow when I leave.”
“Oh! My, that’s rather… umm… that’s great!”
“If she doesn’t want to, or you don’t want her to, or something, I’ll understand.”
“Well, the choice is entirely up to her.” He turned to Allegria now.
“I’ll give you until tomorrow morning to decide. I am tired now, so I think I shall retire to my chamber for the night. I‘ll see you in the morning.” He looked right at Allegria, winked at her and left.

Quincie followed Allegria into her chamber that night to talk to her about the prince's offer. Allegria was shocked when her mother came in right after her.
"What is it, mother?"
"You should go with Prince Kai tomorrow. It would look good for the inn, and we might get more guests."
"That's all you care about isn't it? Whatever's good for the inn. When you made me start wearing this veil, you said, 'Do it for the inn, dear. You're so pretty that we can't make the guests feel bad that they aren't anywhere near as pretty as you.'
"Well that's the truth of it!!!"
"No it's not! Before I even leave my room every morning you make me put it on! None of the guests are even allowed up here! You think I'm a horrendous monster!!! You can't stand to even say you're related to me! You treat me like an intruder in your family and like I shouldn't be here!!!"
"BECAUSE YOU DON'T BELONG HERE ALLEGRIA! I FOUND YOU ON THE DOORSTEP THE DAY AFTER YOU WERE BORN!!!"
Allegria was stunned into silence. Her heart was shattered and she ran out of her room. Her mother tried to apologize to her as she left, but Allegria would hear none of it. Storming to the top of the stairs, Allegria climbed out the window and climbed onto the roof. The roof was her place to escape from everything in her life, as she looked out upon the ocean.
"I like the view up here."
Allegria turned with a jolt and saw Kai sitting next to her, staring out at the ocean.
"How did you get up here?"
"I used a ladder. It fell down when I got up here and now I'm kind of... stuck. How did you get up here?"
"I climbed out of the window right there," she said motioning to the window near the roof, which she had emerged.
"Oh. So why are you up here?"
"I just wanted some time to think."
"About my offer?" The events that transpired between her and her mother flashed through her mind all at once. She shook it off and sighed.
"No. I've already decided to go."
"Something is bothering you. Is it this place? Is it me? Do you-"
"It's not you. I just want to get away from this place," she said as she turned her head away from him.
"So let's leave now."
"What?"
"Let's leave for the castle now. The rain stopped a while ago, so the dirt road should be dry now. Do you want to?"
Allegria was faced with a tough decision at this point. Leave now and never see her mother again, or wait until morning and bring some closure to the fight with her mother?
"Let me go get my things."
When she finally got Kai off the roof, she went into her room, and packed her things. She wrote a note to her family, and left it on her pillow. Kai roused his guards and driver, paid the bill for their stay and then they left. As the carriage left the inn, Allegria stared out the window.
"Please let things get better for me..."
