Yeah, you read the title

Rp between Nek and Saphire
To Dream, or not To Dream
PostPosted: Sun Jan 04, 2009 11:42 pm

The caves beneath the castle were not really a place Goyals usually strayed, at least, no more than one that Saphire knew. Her claws clicked softly on the stone steps leading down to the crevice that the young Goyal knew to be the entrance to the caves. Though the sound was gentle and quiet, Saphire's claws not nearly as sharp as she would like them to be but unable to do anything about it unless she grew, it echoed through the crevice and up the stairs to brush against the dusty halls leading back to the main parts of the castle.

Stealing herself to take another step, Saphire sought the well-trained image that she had formed within her mind. No matter what it took she would become a warrior. Even if that meant creeping down the stairs and away from her self-imposed guard of Van Helsing to the all but abandonned caves underneath the castle to try and bargain with one of the most reclusive and unsocial Goyals that she had heard about.

Even so, if it would help her to become a warrior and possibly even to grow into her long overdue adulthood, Saphire would simply have to continue. Who was she to say she could be brave and strong and protect the Clan if she was afraid of one of the members that she would eventually have to serve with? "I am not afraid," she muttered, fluttering her gossamer wings slowly to calm herself, "If it is what I want to do then I will not be afraid." Saying this to herself numerous times in her mind, Saphire lifted her trembling claws to go down another step.

The one Goyal that Saphire knew to dwell in the caves, the one that she was now hoping to see? Nek had been practicing with her newly acquired, but horribly rusted and never again meant to see the light of battle, sword when the whisper of footsteps outside her cave caught her attention. At first her usual scowl deepened, thinking that now of all times Moonlight was going to show up and demand something of her. Her scowl quickly turned into a frown. Moonlight never simply walked up to Nek, no, she usually hid herself until she could tackle Nek with some sort of pounce or shout.

She sighed, sheathing the rusted blade and leaning it against the wall to see who had dared to disturb her in her own home. If it was Moonlight, then she was either serious about something, or trying some new ploy. The thought made Nek pause for a moment, thinking. After the moment had passed she nodded to herself and slipped silently down a tunnel adjacent to the one the noises were coming from. The tunnel led to an opening in the shadowed side of the stone hall above the staircase, allowing her to get behind whoever she heard approaching. She expected to see some tall figure perched forbodingly on the crevice she called her 'official doorstep', but instead there was a young Goyal.

Not just any young Goyal, she thought, remembering the ephermeral wings and bright blue dress that stood out in the crowd almost as much as Nek's own bright green tunic. Nek would admit that bright green was not the best for stealthy techniques, but she liked her tunic and wasn't about to change it. Shaking the small thoughts from her mind she began to ponder the bigger picture to herself. Why was a permachild such as Saphire currently looming on the edge of the stairs where the stone met with her own familiar sandstone entrance?

Her curiousity now piqued, Nek glided quietly over to another portion of wall nearer the young Goyal. She once again thought breifly on the color of her tunic, but once again shoved the thought aside and turned her attention to watch Saphire, the hesitant yet determined actions of the Goyal causing Nek's usual scowl or frown to turn into a confused mou. What was Saphire doing here? How did she know to come here in the first place? So many questions asked, but none as of yet answered. Nek let herself drop from the wall to land in a glide that swooped over Saphire to land behind her, "What are you doing here?"

She had meant for her voice to sound dark and menacing, but all that had come across her tone was mild tenacity mixed with heavy curiousity. Inwardly cursing herself for being unable to mask her interest she waited for the younger Goyal's reply.

Saphire had just made it down to the soft sand of the cave's beginning floor when a wooshing noise caused her turn about. Not seeing anything, she was about to turn around again and dismiss the sound as her imagination when a voice sounded out from behind her. "Agh!" Saphire jumped in reply, spinning about to stare up at the bright green and crossed-armed figure of the very Goyal she had been coming to see.

Nek did not seem as forboding as Saphire had thought she would at being disturbed so deep in her home. It almost seemed as if the other were interested in what she was doing there, which Saphire could not force herself to beleive. Why would she be interested in Saphire? Other than the fact that she was a small goyal in a big cave with no obvious reason for being there.

Her wings fluttered a little more as she tried to dispell her nervousness, finding it easier to do now that she was actually face to face with the short and not so scary as she had seemed before Warrior. It took her a few more moments, adding in the tap-tap sound of the Warrior's impatient claws on the small patch of stone under them, to realize that Nek had asked a question and still had not received an answer.

"Oh! Um!," she stuttered, straightening herself and trying to appear as militarily adept as possible, "My name is Saphire and I am here to request training by yourself in preparation for becoming a Warrior!" The last part came out as almost a yell, and Saphire had to hold back a wince as it echoed about the cavern, but she had said what she wanted to say and would not take it back.

Well, she supposed it didn't matter if she took it back or not, it mattered if Nek decided to accept her request or not. The Warrior seemed the type who would reply with an 'I am disinclined to acquest to your request'. Saphire debated getting down on her knees as if to beg, but didn't know if that would help or hurt her in Nek's opinion and so settled for a quick bow.

"If you would please!" she added, coming out of her bow to look up expectantly at the Warrior. Her eyes tried to look hard and determined, attempting to convince Nek of their sincerety, but Saphire had no way of knowing if they actually pulled it off or not.

Nek's lips quirked into an amused scowl at the young Goyal's surprise, though she quickly forced her lips back to their normal position. The young goyal was certainly brave enough to come down to the caves, she shouldn't be laughed at for that, as Nek well knew about the kind of bravity that came with such returned actions.

After the other goyal had calmed down it seemed that she wasn't as afraid of Nek as she desired her to be. Either Saphire was braver than Nek had originally given her credit, or Nek simply wasn't as menacing as she wished to be. It could be that she had allowed her intrigue to soften her edges, but that didn't reassure her much for her position, making her frown a little more real than it had been after her initial amusement.

She watched the other's wings flutter, their ethereal form glistening slightly in the dim light of the torches set aflame in the hall above. Nek tapped her claws, still waiting for a response to her question, wondering if it was even heard. If the young Goyal couldn't remember the question she had been asked that might help Nek save face in the dilemma of trying to be imposing that she was currently failing at in her eyes.

But of course the young Goyal had heard and remembered it, Nek had to switch her ploy to giving Saphire more credit instead of lessening her own. The answer in and of itself was pretty well played. She was tempted to outright say 'no' and see what the young goyal would do next, but she didn't want to be cruel, well, not at the moment anyways.

A small smile formed on her lips at Saphire's bow and 'If you would please'. It would certainly feel good to teach someone how to fight again, as her techniques had been taught to those in her small village before the castle fell to its current state, and she would then have a sparring partner. Even if she would be a small sparring partner. Nek didn't see what it could hurt at the moment, but her thoughts began to turn towards the possible future reprecussions her actions could have.

Another battle could come and Saphire might possibly charge in thinking she was able to participate in such things. She could also someday become cornered and forced to fend for herself, which she would then know how to do. But if she did know she might go looking for trouble. And if she didn't she might go looking for trouble anyways but be less prepared for it when she found it. Nek's frown returned as she battled it about in her mind, wondering what would be the best course of action, and what might be the responsible course of action.

Of course, Nek wasn't usually one to go against responsibilities. But she did not see them clearly defined at the moment. If she didn't teach Saphire she might be dissuading a future Warrior from joining the ranks, if she did she might be putting the young goyal in danger, if she didn't she might be sending her into a tantrum that might have disastrous results.

Nek's eyes flew wide as she thought about her last reason; Saphire wasn't really a child. She merely looked like one. Nek cleared her throat, "How old are you, really? How long ago were you cursed?" If it was more than a year then Nek would take her in and test her mettle, skill, and temperment before actually teaching her to fight. If it was less than a year then she would simply tell Saphire to come back when it had been a year and Nek would teach her then.

Saphire's eyes flared angrily a bit at Nek's first seeming smirk, but it faded into confusion and curiousity when she saw the older Warrior begin to think more. It looked like she was beginning to get more unhappy the more she thought, which made Saphire more worried, and more nervous, than she had been before.

The wait was making her soft yet leathery skin begin to heat and she wondered how long Nek was going to think about her answer before she gave it. To Saphire it was horribly simple: either Nek wanted to teach her or she didn't. She wasn't about to stand at attention for minutes on end just to be told 'no'.

But maybe it was a test, Saphire wondered, forcing herself to remain erect and looking up at Nek. Maybe Nek wanted to see if she really had the patience to train as a Warrior before she accepted the request of someone who might train for a day and then grow tired of it and wander off. Saphire was thinking now; she wouldn't be cast off that easily.

A Warrior was who she wanted to become and a Warrior was who she was going to be, she had already decided this and so she was going to do it. If Nek wouldn't train her then she would just go to another Warrior and ask them, and then another and ask them, and then another until she had asked every single one of them. Someone had to want to teach her to fight.

She nearly jumped in surprise again when Nek widen her eyes and looked intently at Saphire, seeming to bore into her own eyes and down her frame. Now that Nek was getting serious she was a lot more intimidating than Saphire had first come to beleive. Did that mean that Nek was taking her seriously now? She could only wait to watch the Warrior open her mouth and reply.

How old was she? That was it? Saphire's shoulders sagged and her mouth dropped open in dismay when she realized that Nek had not given her an answer but simply asked another question. Her own mouth quickly closed again and she resumed her ramrod straight position to reply as grown up as she could manage. "I was a year at Halloween," she said, pondering if she should bow again with her answer.

She wondered what was going through Nek's head that gave her such pause between speaking, but resisted thinking about it too long with the knowledge that she would likely never know. Once again, though, she was stuck at attention and waiting with sweat beginning to drip down her back at the suspense of a verdict.
