Cosmetic surgery can be a wonderful tool.
People who have burned half of there face can get it restructed. A war victim can look like a presentable human again. A baby with cleft lip can be fixed. And a girl with small boobs can make them huge.
Does cosmetic surgery teach a wrong message about self-image? & When is it okay to get cosmetic surgery?
Discuss as Tony would say.

Plastic Surgery is a pretty awesome thing in all of the situations you mentioned (even the boobs, I suppose razz ). It is sad when people overdo it just because they aren't happy with themselves. It is also unfortunate how people can become addicted to it. Alas, it can be such a wonderful tool.
Have you seen the people who have had face transplants? I think there have been two of them now, one of them in the U.S. It's pretty amazing. Obviously they had been severely mutilated and needed the new faces. I doubt anyone would try to get a face transplant for cosmetic reasons, lol.
I don't think I could ever get plastic surgery myself. I'm fine with my body the way it is, and terrified of surgery. xd Plus, it's way out of my price range.

Each and every time you are put under anesthesia you could die. Equate cosmetic surgery with sky diving or bungee jumping.

If it's about self image, I think that if you want to look a certen way, or are to lazy to diet and exercise, then go for it, but if it's the mass media that has influenced you then no.
There are people who take it to far, get addicted, or want a new body *cough*Michael Jackson*cough*
3 thumbs up for breast implants! blaugh

Cosmetic surgery, body modifications, tattooing... Those aren't new. Long before humanity gathered together into flood cultures, we were nomads, and pretty primitive ones at that. But even back then we practiced such things. Primitive tattooes made with bone needles and dye made from fish bones or coal or herbs or whatever... Bone earrings, nose piercings, coal and herbal dyes for makeup. I don't really understand how you can be against those things, if the argument is that it's "unnatural". We live in a pretty ******** unnatural environment already. So what, replacing your heart with an artifical replica is okay, if it makes you live longer, while adding ink under your skin for aesthetic purposes isn't? Temporary makeup is okay, but not permanent? We can't be both 'natural' and 'unnatural', Kino thinks, and we're far too long gone to embrace 'natural'. If you're against those things, but you drive a car and watch TV and eat super-processed food, that makes you a hypocrite. Not that anyone seems to be against it so far, heh, but for those of you who are against these things, that is my humble opinion.

I'd just like to point out that it's a cleft lip. I know that's not the point though. I guess it depends on the surgery. I think it's stupid for vainity reasons. People should love you for you, not your body. Somethings like actual deformities(such as cleft lips) are different. If not fixed you could get really sick and life would be difficult. And people are cruel and though they might overlook a weight thing a hole in your face is another matter.

So because people are cruel we kind of have to accept plastic surgery. makes sense, sadly.
and i knew how to spell it, i don't know why i wrote clif.

The outside IS more important than the outside, when it comes to attraction. First and foremost we are animals, and animals like to show off and flaunt themselves in order to mate. It's a form of ritual where we show why WE should have many mates and pass on our genes. Like... bulls. They go headbutt each other to show their superiority. We do it through being attractive.
I don't think tattoos or earrings are any different from buying fancy clothing. That's also vanity, or we'd all be dressed in earth colours, sturdy shoes and have short hair. I'm getting a tattoo in a year or two. Designed it myself, even. I don't mean to brag, but... Anyway, heh... If people were to marry and have kids with the mind as a basis, the gene pool would pretty soon degenerate us into no-good weaklings with sharp minds. 'Soon' in evolutionary terms, mind you. I say, go for a healthy body foremost, and then a healthy mind. Of course, I don't advocate vanity or cruelty. But I think it's simple. People like to look good, so why shouldn't they?

I think plastic surgery is kind of broad. Can't lose weight(and you're actuallly trying), or something like a cleft lip that has to be fixed is different from ego things. There's so many important things to spend money on and it seems selfish to waste it. I have people make fun of how i look, but i'm not going to take desperate measures. It's really your opinion that matters when it comes to yourself. And the world has to much to say about looks. I don't know where they come up with what is acceptable and "pretty" but few people meet standards. Seems like a whole lot of making everyone feel like crap about themselves. And i know a lot of people that are ugly in my book that have a boyfriend/husband. Obviously they saw something in them. If someone only wants to be with you for your looks that i don't want them around me anyway. They'll eventually turn on you.

i think that if you are getting the surgery to better your self go ahead. (ex. the weight loss, reconstruction after a terrible accident) if the surgery is for a medical reason then go ahead. but if you are getting a liposuction because you are gained 5 pounds during x-mass, or because your new boyfriend wants you to, i think that it is selfish.if your boyfriend or girlfriends is telling you to change your body then they really dont love you, find some body else, and learn to love yourself.

Why is it selfish if you do it for someone else? Why is it not selfish to learn to love yourself? Why is it not selfish to leave someone because they obviously don’t love you for you who are?

Fat people that waste their money doing lipo and buying miracle pills make me laugh really. You do not need to shove junkfood down your throat and sit on your a** all day. That is what makes most people fat. People claim all kinds of bullshit, like "depriving themselves" of foods they love, just have a lack of self control. I used to be a pretty fat boy myself when I was younger, then I decided to start playing hockey, and stop eating garbage food on a regular basis. Sure I have cake or pie etc on special occasions, but I don't whine about being "deprived" of good tasting food, like many that go on diets. It is all really about self control and image really.

It depends on the situation if you are doing it because you feel it will make you look better like getting a boob job, botox etc.. then it is unnecessary
