The History Channel is running a series on the seven deadly sins. I haven't had a chance to do much research but it is interesting. I wonder how much of what is attributed to one or another of the deadly sins is not a sin at all but something that Christians made up for one reason or another.

Like Sloth, for example. There are two variations, one of which bears a very remarkable resembelence to depression which, the early Greeks attributed to an illness and which modern medicine is now also discovering is a physical malady.

This is not to say that lazyness isn't something to be avoided but should we be stigmatizing people who are depressed? That doesn't seem very compassionate to me. Stigmatizing people with illnesses, especially mental illnesses, seems to be a symptom of the rampant judgementalism that has infected Protastants since the early days. I know being judgemental is wrong, we are explicitly told to 'judge not lest ye be judged.' That's pretty straight forward.

There are certain choices we make that feed the depression, such as dwelling on self. Dwelling on self does not have a good end.

Those who have clinically diagnosed depression and are on meds for it - I'm sorry for them but don't really consider it a sin. Those who display signs of depression, then act out of that misery, such as King Saul trying to kill David - they're still responsible for their actions. It can't be excused or soothed away with "oh, he was just depressed, poor thing."

No one said it was an excuse for poor choices, however it suggests that we might be able to help, perhaps act more compassionately towards people rather than rushing to judgement. That if we approach depression as something that has an organic basis, we can help them bear the burden and give them strength to avoid poor choices.

I always found it kinda annoying when people said there were the "7 deadly sins." Reason being (yesss I am backing myself up just give me the shot here lol) Murder is just as bad as a lie. not in our eyes, but in Gods eyes. Any simple little sin does hte exact same thing that murder does. it seperates us from God. And seperation from God, we we all know, Results in Hell UNLESS we have accepted Jesus Christ, Belive that he is Gods son, and in what he did and that he rose from the dead.

The reason these particular seven sins are defined as deadly is because there is a direct correlation between each of them and death, either through poor health or violence. A lie is more subtle and the consequences not so obvious.

But who is rushing to judgment? Who is condemning?

If people agree certain behavior is bad, and God says certain behavior is a sin, how is that rushing to judgment? No one is being strung up or set afire.

Good point, thumbs up.

Except that God doesn't list 7 deadly sins. The popes created that list. God gave us 10 commandments and being depressed isn't on that list, nor, do I recall is 'sloth'. So then we do have a rush to judgement and to condemn by Man and not God. And people who follow God, especially in this day and age, where we have free access to God's word ourselves and are, in general, in this country, literate; are responsible for finding the truth.

Just because someone says there are 7 deadly sins, does not mean that God said there were 7 deadly sins. Sadly people who should know better, (Christians) don't.
