Yeah. They pulled me from the comp. them put it on some stupid game setting.. -__- My friends are stupid.

But that's besides the point. I have a question for all you gamers out there.

But still the situation leading up to the question:
I have a completely different view in games than most of all my friends. I a big nerd who loves experimental and interesting systems. I care not at all for graphics and popularity. My favorite game of all time is Phantom Brave. It has an interesting battle system. It had pretty mediocre reviews. People commented on the things that I loved most about the game and said they sucked. Which doesn't matter to me because I usually love the games that everyone else hates. I'm a gameplay nerd. I don't need story, graphic, soundtrack. I mean, yeah they are a plus, but they are nothing to me.

So we were on a game site looking though random things and I saw 'The Last Remnant' and was like "That game looks interesting..." only to get a sudden "The reviews says it sucks" from of of my friends. This happens alot.

And it always irritates me, because gaming is like an art to me. I do it to have fun. Try new ways to do things. But alot of other gamers I know are just bland buy and beat gamers.

So my question is:

What kind of gamer are you?
What kind of games do you enjoy?
Why does Halo suck so much yet everyone loves it?

I played Phantom Brave, and I am NEVER going back into it. Disgaea is where it's at.

Anyways, I do not know what kinda gamer I am. I guess hardcore seen how I am hopelessly addicted to them whenever I play it. Mainly RPG's, FPS, Action / Adventure, and whatever is interesting at the time.

A couple of games I never got into was God of War. Being a Sony person (Not fanboy) I just never got into it. I was more into other games (Like freakin' Metal Gear) and was just too occupied with other games out there. That isnt to say that I do not like God of War, I just never understood it.

Halo 3 sucks. Play a real game like Unreal Tournament.

Well, you saw my collection.
I guess you could say I'm buy and beat, since most games I don't play beyond that. Though, what's the problem with that?
It just means I try a lot of stuff but only return to favourites.

Gameplay matters, but it's more complicated. Sometimes graphics, sounds/music, or story can carry a game with abysmal gameplay. I like immersion, and it can be done through any combination of qualities.

In general, I guess I like games with some decent speed to them, and that aren't bogged down with tons of crap. That's probably why I'm into RTS and FPS the most, along with RPG's like Diablo.
I like other stuff, but not as broadly.

Things I greatly hate:
-forced repetition including grinding, check-point save systems, induced trial and error
-full screen menus, bad interface, stupid design decisions
-a lot of text to read. Entirely kills the pacing, immersion, and game writing sucks pretty often

Halo doesn't suck. That's a knee jerk reaction to its popularity. It does a lot of things really well, and some I don't particularly like. It's not a favourite, but it's far from sucking.

I have to break it down, since I don't have a single favorite.

The First Half-Life is my first favorite. HL was the first game in it's genre to truly introduce the regular-guy-turned-impromptu-hero mechanic. It also has an decent, original plotline, which is something rare in FPSs.

And then there's Halo 2 as my second favorite. Mostly because it touched upon the Covenant, their mindset and religious politics by briefly seeing through their eyes as the Arbiter. Halo 3 didn't really show much about the crumbling Covenant or of the Elite. So I wasn't really wild about it. But it was still pretty good.

But I did spent the night waiting outside the EB Games waiting for the midnight release. I was kind of a fanboy back then. biggrin

I wish I could say UT was a favorite. But it doesn't feel as fluid as Halo. Vehicles handle better in Halo and UT3 didn't have a ripper. NO UT GAME IS COMPLETE WITHOUT A RIPPER. D:<

Oh, and FEAR was good, too.

I should stop rambling now. I can go all day.

I wanted to play Phantom Brave. And I guess I'd call myself a hardcore gamer. I play indie games and popular ones. Right now I'm playing Chrono Trigger (again), Max Payne, Killer7, and Final Fantasy 12 (still rolleyes ). I also have a slight addiction to making perfect gems in Diablo 2. To me, Halo multiplayer is bullshit. But Halo singleplayer is fun.

Nag - I love DISGAEA!!!! It's amazing. But character building in Phantom Brave is significantly more interesing... and not so job exclusive, ya know? And YUS!!! URT2004 is beautiful. I always talk about how awesome that game is and my friend are always like "Halo = better" D:

Gharbad - I can't be a buy and beat gamer. I'm a buy and master completely everything gamer. I can't just play a game and be satisfied... because gaming is an art to me [major techno hippie syndrome]. And I think that graphics are distracting the easily amused, allowing game developers to not make the gameplay top-notch. I'm a big fan of trial and error. That's why My fave game type is turn-based strategies. This is why I love Nippon Ichi Software so much. And being an RPG nerd and big reader, I can stand text. Halo doesn't suck. But it is nowhere near great. It's a mediocre FPS like the millions I've played far before it came out.

Mike - OMG! Half-Life = BEAUTIFUL [I don't mean graphics] fun.

Jimmy - LOL@12STILL! Me too. That game is sooooooo ridiculous. I find myself starting to play it then suddenly stopping because I've forgotten where I am in the story.

emo

Graphics are not for the easily amused, they're for immersion. FPS rarely works with poor graphics, because they rely on immersion.
Without proper shadows and lighting, 'scary' games are a joke.
I love the environments, and most of that is graphical quality and good art. They're a huge part of many aspects of the game. How can your story infer the sort of epicness of LotR without a physical environment to back it up? Unless you're just reading it, but then you're just reading it.

Don't call it a mediocre FPS, because you're implying FPS'es are mediocre. They're not, you're just not an FPS player. I'm not touching any of the JRPGs because I don't care about them. To me they're all pretty much the same, but I don't go calling them mediocre.

Edit: And I do realize you play FPS... and I play some RPGs. I'm still not an RPG player. It's only a particular few I enjoy.

I think Halo is one of the greatest Fps.
And Nagis, Halo three doesn't suck.
It might suck to you, just like Metal gear solid is made for cowards, to me. I'm sorry if my game is not good enough cause there isn't a box you can hide in.

To Ska: I know! It is like the loooooongest game ever (even though I know its not). I know that I can't play it for more than 2 hours (for some reason).
To Ghar: FPS games ftw!

Comparing Halo 3 to MGS is like Comparing one Genre of gaming to another.

If you want a FPS game. UT would like a word with you. Your argument is invalid.

The only thing Halo 3 brought to the table is Duel Wielding. Which isnt new to me, seen how Mutators can change those rules in UT. Plus Halo feels very slow to me.

So yeah, Halo sucks. And I could care less if you hate MGS. Does not make your point any better. if you think Halo is one of the greatest FPS games on the market. Then you sure are missing out on alot of things that are better than Halo.

Protip: MGS isnt a shooter. Nice try on getting under my skin wink

It doesn't matter if Halo is slow or brought nothing new.
Neither of those relate to how good the game is.
New doesn't mean good, and overdone (like WW2) doesn't mean bad.
It doesn't matter if you played the same thing a hundred times, because if a different preson hasn't, the game is amazingly fresh.

Relative slowness is the style it chose. Every game has its own feel, and that's what makes them different.

He wasn't comparing the games, he was comparing the attitudes towards them.
PostPosted: Fri Jan 02, 2009 10:52 am

Whenever people compare one genre of gaming to another. It tickles me pink on how ill informed they are. I agree that the feel of the games are different. But the FPS genre is the same. As much as I hate Valve, Team Fortress 2 was another good shooter. But if someone hates it and tries to get under my skin about how "Oh, well, MGS is a shooter for cowards", it showes me the intelligence on how the argument to them fits in with the games. It's silly.

So if I am correct it does not matter about the attitude. It's all a personal opinion.

Honestly, if people are going to go apeshit over my quality standards over what is good and what isnt good. (IE: Me saying Halo sucks) Then get off the internet and stop taking it so seriously. I hear this all the time, and your posts are not going to convince me otherwise. I played Halo enough to dislike it. If you do not want to hear what I have to say(IE: me saying UT is better), then stop replying to it and move on.

Again, he wasn't comparing the games. He's just saying an opinion as an opinion. It's not fair to say it sucks, you just don't like it. That's what I meant by attitude. He didn't call it a shooter.

What do you mean the FPS genre is the same? It's not. When I said feel, I meant between FPS. It's very different, which is why you say Halo is slow. Even Quake vs Unreal is different.
I find it interesting you get offended over MGS, and rightly point out it's a silly argument, yet continue thinking Halo sucks.

By the way, my friend who plays even more games than me thinks Halo is a near perfect game. I don't agree with him, but hey.

Edit:
Mark your edits...
What are you suggesting by saying that? That we should all just troll eachother with ill conceived comments? It's common decency to respect others' opinions, which includes not throwing s**t that people obviously don't take very well.
I'm not trying to convince you that Halo is amazing, I'm trying to get you to accept that merely disliking something does not make it suck. That implies everyone else enjoys sucky games, implying they're stupid. "Quality standards" are bullshit.
PostPosted: Fri Jan 02, 2009 11:10 am

Alot of people do not like MGS. Ive grown used to hearing it to the point to where it does not bother me anymore. I never got offended, I just pointed out that the two games are completely different.

If it makes anyone feel better. The online sucks.

Hey, I never quoted anyone on that. So back off. And I know alot of people has their likes and dislikes. But no one is going to tell me that just because I think it sucks, does not mean it doesn't. It does to me, and no one can convince me otherwise.
