Generally I have noticed that in Role Plays that happen in already established universes, it helps to have a back story that everyone understands and is comfortable with. The following three back stories are nothing too complex or over the top, very simple and easy to understand. The Pasts of our characters' are still in existence. Past comic book/TV/movie plots are still there. These are just here to give us somewhere to start off. Let's begin:
#1. Police put themselves on red alert New Year's Eve with a focus on Arkham Asylum, which contained nearly every villain in the city. Batman was hunting down a few of the villains not in Arkham at the time. The Mad Hatter, The Scarecrow, and The Joker. At midnight, The ball dropped in Gotham, and the West wall of Arkham was blown up, meanwhile the inside of the Asylum was gripped in a massive riot started by Killer Croc. When the dust cleared around 1 am, to the Commissioner's and Batman's surprise, Arkham had been emptied. Gordon and Batman face the biggest wave of crime and villainy in their careers, as Gotham's streets are flooded by every major criminal.
#2. Crime is up in Gotham. The Holiday season in the city has seen one of it's bloodiest. Murder rates sky rocketed, robbing rate doubled, and kidnappings were becoming common place. Batman and his allies are stretched thin, as their focus ever shifts from crime to crime, and barely any arrests have been made at all. Two days before New Years, a massive prison break from Arkham was staged, and even more villains made it to the streets. Batman is faced with a new year that looks very bleak.
#3. Batman is faced with a different kind of crime in Gotham. His enemies have been in collaboration, more so than ever before. It seems that just about every villain has banded together. Robberies and hostage situations have been executed by teams of four to five villains at once. Most often with one standing out at first, to put on the guise of a solo job, and once Batman was locked in combat, the other villains would intrude. Although their schemes usually failed, Batman has been unable to capture or arrest any of the villains. Plus reports from The Justice League's UN space station say that some sort of dimensional portal opened up and then shut on New Years Eve, and several beings from another dimension have been released. Batman is faced with threats on all sides of him. His old enemies working as one, and some unknown forces from beyond.
