Everyone knows this topic unless they had been living under a rock since 1990, modern art, an artist won a turner prize for a room with a flickering light. Correct or Incorrect?
One of my college teachers once brought up this very subject, and he submitted the arguement 'Art is what gets people talking.' I agree with this, but sometimes Modern Art just escapes me entirely.
So what are your views?

I think your teacher was/is right, an elephant painting is "art" worth millions of dollars. WTF man? it's just a bunch of random brush strokes!

Emotion is what makes art art. If something makes you feel an emotion
Happy
Sad
Scared
Confused
Bewildered
Then it is art. Modern Art falls into the Bewildered part, and shock art just conveys disgust, and outrage.

Art is a window into the world within both the viewer and the artist. It's what connects the realm of our external, physical senses and that of our internal, mental, emotional and spiritual existence. I think this covers all types of art. My old definition of art was the tangible manifestation of otherwise intangible emotions, concepts and "spirits". This can range from a solid red painting to an elaborate setting of a real world scene.

I agree with you, Violet... but honestly, sometimes it seems to me some artists just get bored and see what they can get away with.
Like, people will ohh and ahh over something, completely missing the point, just because it is popular. Or, even better, they'll make up "Well, this red line here is for anger... about... uh... a hamsteak..." just to seem intelligent.
Art is art, but it's gotta be genuine and make people think.

In all seriousness, I'm one of those artists that will throw a paint-splattered canvas at you and tell you it was me feeling something, and you may or may not believe me at all. I've gotten enough "i see a whale!"s and "that looks like rotten lettuce"s in my life to feel... vaguely alienated from the general populous.
One liar spoils a whole bunch of legitimate people, as I've seen throughout history... Le sigh.

I think one of the reasons why I can't fully appreciate art is because I find it very difficult to put myself in another person's shoes. I try to see through their eyes, but it's with my brain, and my limited understanding of their feelings at the time.
With other forms of artwork, in which the aesthetic appeal or the message is much more obvious, I have an easier time of figuring out some of the things that the original artist meant to portray, and because of that I can appreciate their art much more. It's the difference between trying to read a typed script and a bunch of hastily scrawled lines: the former is that much easier for me to understand, whereas I really have to fight to get something good out of the latter.
I think I'd only be able to fully appreciate abstract, modern art if I knew the artist and they gave a very detailed explanation of the thought process behind the piece. On the other hand, plenty of artists don't want to influence how their art is viewed and let the viewer enter with a clean slate.
I prefer artwork that I can understand, and I especially prefer artwork that is clever, patterned or elegantly simplistic, and is beautiful to the eye while still conveying an important message. I just have a hard time finding that in modern art without experiencing a "Huh?" moment.

Personally I think some art is just really random.
When I say random I do not mean it should not be classified at art it is just a different style.
I have nothing against the art, I just can't say I'm a huge fan of it. Then again, I'm really not into some art forms.
I much prefer cinematography over paintings.
I feel that the art should be whatever the artist wants to crate, and he/she should be able to express themselves in this way.
