In the USA at the age of 18, we are legally adults.
We can vote.
We can go to college and get a career.
We can die for our country.
We can buy porn.
We can be in porn.
We can get married.
We can buy and smoke cigarettes.
We can go to jail. =[
We can gamble.
We can buy guns.
We can rent/buy our own place.
But it's illegal for and 18 year old to do any of this stuff and drink.
(of course I'm not saying shoot a gun and drink, there should still be limits to drinking.)
So why 21 for this one thing?
It's beyond my thinking.
I seriously do not understand.

ReRe_is_sweet It is legal at 18 here. Also, you have vote on there twice. oopsy! Yes, that's another point...other countries have lower drinking ages. Canada and Mexico both and the USA is right in between. I can't wait until Obama becomes president so I can be proud to be from my country again.

It is 17 in some countries.
I think that the age of 18 is good because you are officially free, and it symbolizes that freedom. However, at the age of 18 you would still be in high school (unless you turned after the year was over) and drinking could become a problem.

I see no purpose in the legal drinking age. I'm 16 and I've drank several times, so its not like it stops anything. My youth pastor also put it well when he justified a drinking age of 18 by saying "I don't think you should be allowed to be in the military and not drink."
I think 18 is good, maybe 16 but then again that will never happen.

Apparently 21 to the government guesses that people should be able to take care of themselves. I have no clue, maybe because ppl are still growing and the gov doesn't want to harm their growth. [Still not sure mates]

My aunts all got married at 16. Jail: You can also go to jail when you are younger than 18. It's juvie, but it's still jail. In some states you can be thrown in regular jail if you are 17. Gamble: You are not allowed in a casino until you are 21. Buy Guns: I'm not sure about other states, but in my state you cannot buy a gun unless you are 21. As an underaged person, I could not see why you had to be 21 to drink. The more I thought about it I realized that a lot of 18 year olds are still in highschool, and therefore that would be another substance that would be increasingly avaliable to kids younger than 18. A lot of 18 year olds are also fresh out of highschool, have no commitments, and are happy to final be adults and not have to listen to their mother and father. This generally results in the "I can do what I want so I'm going to do it all" mentality. They're trying to rebel against everything they wern't allowed to do before 18. This results in heavy binge drinking, and driving back to mom and dad's house can be added as a potential danger. As well, drinking alcohol can cause the death of someone almost instantly. Drinking and driving by people under the age of 21 is high. This isn't like smoking cigarettes, where they aren't intoxicated but are killing themselves slowly. Once they get behind that wheel they can hit someone and bam, the other person is dead just like that. And on the military thing, you are allowed to drink if you are in the process of serving and potentially dying for your country. Sitting on your a** at home and saying "I'm in the military, I should be able to drink" does not qualify as "serving and potentially dying your country." Overall, alcohol is a dangerous substance. It can be fun in moderation, but I feel that that 21 is a decent age to injest it legally. As a side note, I developed a drinking problem last year, and I was underage. I cannot imagine how much worse it would have been if I was allowed to just walk a block and buy it myself. I at least had that 21 barrier to give me a little bit of 'lay off the bottle' mentality. The marriage law is with parental consent unless you're in Maryland or Georgia. You can gamble legally at 18, on some Indian Reservations; I went to the casino when I turned 18. Your record gets demolished when you turn 18 also and you have a fresh slate. I did say jail not juvie. Same concept but not the same thing. Side note: If you are drunk right at this minute and you are drinking and saying that the alcohol age should stay and you are 21 then you should seriously turn yourself in right now. Either to the police or a mental institution. -shrugs- doesn't make sense to me. If you're going to break a law but not defending the law you're breaking that's just strange to me.

Indian reservations are a completely different story because they are exempt from laws. And in my state, the legal adult age is 17. Also, if we're going to be talking about jail, everyone can go to jail and spend a night before getting transferred. Prison is a different story. And as for me drinking right now, it goes along with my drinking problem that started a while ago that is thankfully diminishing. It isn't an 'immediate stop' kind of thing. I also speed occassionally and don't wear my seatbelt 24/7 when sitting in the front seat. I suppose that I should drive to the police station every time I do that too? I can defend something even if I don't practice it. Just because I don't do everything that I should be doing does not mean that it is not the right thing to do.

In my opinion, there shouldn't be a drinking age. It should be up to the child's parents to decide whether or not the kid can get a drink. I think this because kids tend to like to rebel. When they rebel, they cause trouble.
Another reason is that if you are only able to do it once in a while, it's always fun, but if you are allowed to constantly do something, over time, the novelty wears off. I'm not saying this is true in every case, but it happens.
Another reason is because one I know a lot of people who do things like drink under-age because they think it makes them look cool. There are also kids that I know who are already drinking at 15 years, with their parent's consent.
