Sorry it took so long to write this. I've been having a touch of writers block. Grr I hate that! Back to Courtney.
Courtney woke up about 6AM the next morning. Her mind was in a haze. For the first time in years, she couldn't think clearly. Or maybe for the first time in years, she was thinking clearly.
She had a weird dream that night. Unlike most memorable dreams, nothing really happened. She just closed her eyes and saw Duncan. She couldn't get him out of her mind.
Courtney got out of bed and thought aloud to herself, "Why can't I shake this feeling? What is it about Duncan that drives me nuts? I used to think he was just an annoying little criminal, but the more I got to know him... *sigh*, I need to go for a walk."
Courtney got dressed in her usual clothes and had a little bit of breakfast. Then she headed out the door.
She walked to main street, a lengthily walk, but she didn't mind. It was about 7:05 AM when she got there.
As she was walking, she happened to pass by the restaurant the she and Drake went to eat. Seeing that place again made her cringe. She was about to continue walking when she thought she saw someone. She did a double-take.
It was Duncan! He was sitting at one of the outside tables with an open phone book in front of him. He was talking to a waitress that worked there.
She turned her head away and spent about a minute rubbing her eyes to make sure they weren't deceiving her.
She turned back around and he was gone! The phone book the she could have sworn was on the table was now on the ground with the open pages rapidly flipping inn the wind. She walked over to the book and picked it up.
"But that... that's impossible!" she said, "I could have sworn that he was sitting right there! *sigh* I think I'm going insane."
She went over to a near-by phone booth with the phone book. She examined the link the previously held the book. Yep, someone yanked the phone book straight off.
"Hey, girl!" yelled a middle-aged man, "You know the punk who tore off that phone book?"
Courtney's heart jumped, "What did he look like?"
"Look, I just saw him yank off the phone book. I don't know---"
Courtney grabbed the man by his shirt and raised her voice, "What did he look like?!?!"
"Uh... piercings, skull on his t-shirt, green hair, Mohawk, goatee, uni brow! Why you so desperate?"
But Courtney ran off before the man asked his question. She ran until she reached the beach near by.
He put her hands on her knees to catch her breath. When she could breath evenly, she reached into her pocket and pulled out her wooden skull. She had taken it with her.
She looked at it for a minute, then yelled into the air and went running down the beach!
"He's here! He's here! I can't believe it! He actually came here, for me!"
Her foot got caught in the sand and she tripped. When she landed face first in the sand, she laughed. She just laughed for pure happiness.
"All the lies! All the doubt! Nothing that Drake ever said matters anymore! He was wrong! Duncan is here, in Malibu! He really didn't forget about me!"
And, for the very first time since leaving the island, Courtney was happy.
Aww! Isn't that sweet! But it's not over yet. Coming soon: Part 13
