I have been working on this crocheted hat pattern for a couple days now, but I have reached a point where the pattern makes no sense at all. I'll just post the little piece that I can't figure out.

Rnd 4: 1dc in same place as turning ch, 2dc, *2dc in next st, 2dc, rep from * to end, join with sl st to top of turning ch, ch5, turn (48 sts).

Rnd 5: *2dtr in next st, 1dtr, rep from * to end, join with sl st to top of turning ch, ch3, turn (96 sts).

So, my question is, how do they manage to get to 96 stitches from 48? Am I missing something? Any help would be appreciated.

I got 72 stitches, not 96. To get 96 they would have needed to increase in every stitch.
