And we're back with another episode with minimal ties to the original web series. As such, this will be short.
Something else I've noticed about this new TV version of Sanctuary is that even the musical score is different from the web series. The theme song, the background music, everything. It's the same style, mind you, but the audio track running through the background of each new episode is far apart from what the original had. The beginning of tonight's episode did something to fix that. I heard original Sanctuary web series musical score just as the episode title came up. Same recording and everything (yes, I payed that much attention to the web series and have seen each webisode a multitude of times). It made me smile. Not kidding.
And now back to the previous review's Henry rant: I'm now split on this issue. Sure, I miss the original idea of Henry's character as Mr. Normal in the Magnus sanctuary, but his abnormality is actually pretty cool. He can find people by smell and he won't slobber all over the floor in the process (at least, not when he's in human form). He had a surname in the web series: Foss. I don't know if they kept that or not; maybe werewolf communities don't even need first names if they know everyone by scent. Also, both character histories for Henry place Helen on the "superior from birth" pedestal; in the original he grew up around her and here she raised him. There's something to mentally chew on.
As for the episode's title character, I thought that he and his brother Robbie were pretty interesting people. As characters they were central and served as a plot device at once, which is some darn clever writing as far as I'm concerned. What messes with me, though, is that while both brothers got the same gift of ultra-detailed drawing at high speed, only Edward was autistic. Robbie seemed perfectly fine to me from what little we saw of him in the episode. Sure, he lived inside a cement cave, for lack of a better description, but he was a runaway teen with no place else to go. Besides, what a great canvas. By the way, kudos to anyone who spotted the Stargate references in two or three of Edward's drawings.
Then there was that one scene with Ashley. She's handling the news about her father far better than she did in the web series. There she went on a monster-killing rampage through Old City. Here she shot the heart out of... *gasp* ...a shooting range target. I'm not sure what to think of this alteration to Ashley's character. She's a lot more sensible, which is always a plus, but she's not the same girl she used to be by far.
If anyone has some more things to add (or some disagreements with what I said), please feel free to post.
