So I was wondering if anyone here has had instances where being Christian has affected their choice in music or in video games? Do you feel compelled to avoid specific artists or themes in a game?

Well, let me say this. I really haven't listented to rap but from what I have heard from cars passing by me, it is nothing but trash. They use the Lord's name in vain and not only that, they cuss up a storm. I stay away from heavy metal rock as most of the artists use drugs or are in some type of satanic worship. I pretty much stick to either country music but then some country music all they sing about is drinking, etc. I like listening to the 50's & 60's music, even some 70's. But my overall choice would be gospel music and I am not talking about the contemporary Christian music of today. I am talking about the older stuff. As far as video games, I stay away from playing games that have anything to do with witches, devils, etc. As Christians, we are supposed to "come out from among them and be separate". We are supposed to be different. Nowadays, too many "Christians" blend in with the ones that are not saved and you can't tell the two apart.

I personally hate Rap as well. Its just people saying ignorant, horrible trash to a beat. I like older music myself, with the greatest band of all time: Queen. I tend to stay away from screamo metal as well.
Just wondering: What kinda Heavy metal artists do you avoid?

Well, being Christian has affected the music I listen to, yes. Because I feel like the music of this world isn't really worth it anymore. I'd rather listen to music with a good worshiping message, than other things. That doesn't mean that I exclude other genres because it's not Christian, it's just not what I feel I have to be listening to anymore.
I always liked Metallica, actually. I grew up listening to that music. It hasn't changed since I've been Christian. It's just a matter of how much spiritual food one needs. Doesn't mean you are any more Christian, or any less if you don't listen to all Christian music.
But some of us need more worship than others, we want more worship than others.

yeah, you don't want to listen to anything with offense against God or things that aren't Christian obviously; I like rock, but I try to listen to the artists with song lyrics that are okay, and aren't really bad. I listen to mostly older stuff too^_^ As for rap... that stuff is reallly awful.-.-'

As far as heavy metal artists, I don't know too many because I never really paid any attention to them but one I know for sure is Iron Maiden. I do play Guitar Hero III Rock Legends and one song by Iron Maiden is on it and it is called "The Number of the Beast". By listening really close to the lyrics, it is a song about taking the number of the beast once all the Christians and those who have accepted the Lord as their savior is gone. Satan is even included in the lyrics. I really don't care much for Kiss, Black Sabbath, Pink Floyd. I am not sure of what is really out there now. I like a lot of pop music like the Bee Gees, Air Supply, Celine Dion, etc. I know there are groups out there now that if you sit and listen to the lyrics they do cuss using the "f" word, like 3 Days Grace. I just mainly listen to the lyrics and if it is "iffy" then I change the station.

I liked Iron Maiden because of their style and their sound. Also, I think Pink Floyd is most likely my second favorite band. Just wondering, Why don't you like them? I am a musician, and so I have different views upon musicality than non musicians. Personally, I don't think that music harms you, unless you're REALLY stupid and you do something stupid because of a song.
My Loves: 1. Queen 2. Pink Floyd 3. Ozzy Osbourne 4. Marilyn Manson 5. Led Zeppelin
My Hates: 1. All Rap 2. All country 3. Praise music. (I'm sorry, its just the focus on making sure its Christian somehow just takes away from the quality of the song) 4. All CCM 5. Almost all hip hop

It's not that music can harm you, it's that it can influence someone, and what we listen to is also good insight into our personalities, and psychology.
It can also influence one's personality, and actions. If one lets it.

I am not putting you down for listening to groups like Pink Floyd, Ozzy Osbourne, etc. But, if you look at them, at least I can tell, that there is just something different about them. It is their countenance. A person's countenance can say a lot about them. Most of those people either take drugs or are associated with drugs. Drugs are just something that a "saved Christian" would not get involved in. The type of music you listen to does say a lot about a person as well like whether they are rebellious or not. Now don't get me wrong, country music does have a lot in it as well that can be very iffy. Most country music songs are about people drinking, going to bars etc. Nowadays with music videos as popular as they are, they have made it to where underlying tones, like sex, drugs, etc are there. They may not be shown or in plain view but it is there.
I do think that the type of music anyone listens to, especially for those who are "saved Christians" does make a difference on your life. I always put things this way. What would Jesus do? If I am not sure, I think like this. If Jesus were to return today and saw me doing something that I considered wrong or questionable or listening to something wrong or questionable, would He be pleased with me? If my answer is no, then, I stay away from it and don't do it.

Yes, I always see that there is something different about artists like Ozzy or Pink Floyd. Yes, they have been known to do drugs. But here are a few tid bits:
Ozzy believes in God and in Christ. He has openly said so and that the reason for the references to Satan and darkness in his songs are his way of getting the message of what the world has come to. I suggest you look for the song "Miracle Man" on youtube.
The reason I hate country is because, in my opinion, it has a HORRIBLE sound. All of their singing is done up in their nose, and their huge, distasteful skips in their singing is just painful to my own ears.
If you want to see the best singer out of any genre of music, save musicals and opera, search for "Freddie Mercury" on youtube.

When it comes to music, the only stuff I don't touch is country. I prefer more hard rock then anything else. such as Rammstein, Powerman 5000, Godsmack, and many more. And as far as video games go, Diablo and Devil May Cry are 2 of my faves. I actually rather like games dealing with demons and stuff (such as Castlevania) not so much as I like demons nor do I worship them, but it's just good-gaming (although I prefer hardcore battle more than anything). I do not believe that music/games affect people, it is the person himself/herself who is weak and susceptible enough to be influenced by it. games and music both have their ups-and-downs.

My room mates listen to Rammstein. I don't mind it, but it's not really to my taste. Don't mind some Godsmack songs....

I find that music has a profound impact on people and their moods.
One thing I also found was that while adults are able to listen to music and know that there is more to life than sex, drugs and instant gratification and fame; younger people who are still forming their world view, do not know that these things are not all there is to life. I stopped playing secular music in my vehicle when I realized that. Even though I enjoyed some of it greatly, it was teaching a wrong world view to anyone who is impressionable or whose world view is not fully formed yet.
As for Rammestein, rocking music but I cannot condone any music that is filled with hatred towards women. That goes for Rap as well. Any music that purports hate is right off my list of acceptable music. There is more than enough hatred in the human heart already without feeding it by choice.
And finally, when I switched to Christian music, I found that my sense of well being improved greatly. There is something about uplifting music that is soothing on a bad day and even more uplifting on a good day.

Made a good point. I can't understand German, though, I just like the way things sound, if I can't understand it.
