It was getting dark as Latona made it to the part where the Estalian Desert and Kierlak Desert merge. I'll camp here tonight... she thought. Latona set up her small tent and built a rather good-size fire. She sighed as she sat down and ate her dinner.
After she finished her meal, Latona laid down and watched the stars until she drifted off to sleep.

She awoke several hours later in the middle of the night and found her fire was still blazing.

Latona frowned and rubbed her eyes as she looked around and back at the fire. "Hmm...? I must have been dreaming..." She stretched and stood up, dusting herself off. Latona checked the fire, tilting her head as she watched it, deep in thought.

"I hope you didn't mind me adding more wood to your fire, you looked cold." Sitting across the fire from her was a cloaked figure all in black, his head was hooded, she noticed the glint of steel beneath his cloak as well.

Latona jumped and pulled an arrow to her bow without thinking. When she heard what he said, she lowered her aim and relaxed a little, but still stood her ground. "... Thank you, sir.." She paused and noticed very clearly the weapon underneath his cloak. "May I ask who you are and what you're doing here?" she asked softly.

She could barely see a smile beneath the cowl of his hood at her reaction. "I am here to ask you the same question. Few people come this far out into the desert, even fewer still by themselves...."

Latona hesitated before sitting down and watching the fire, "I am... investigating a crime... by creatures unknown. They call them the walking dead." She blinked then looked up at him, "My name is Latona."

A soft smile spread across her face, "I have come to see them for myself..." She suddenly frowned and sat up straighter, "Can you tell me what they are...? And about the expedition that was attacked...? And you mentioned 'we'?"

"Like I said it is not safe to travel alone.... I am not familiar with any expedition out here... we try and monitor all travelers, but the Kierlak is a big place. As for the dead, they are the remnants of a lost empire. We are not sure what caused them to disappear, but we know that what they left behind is a testament to their power, and knowledge of Necromancy."

Latona watched the fire as he spoke. She thought about what he said then frowned, "How can they be defeated? And how much of a threat are they to the people on the outskirts of the desert?"

"Even though they are already dead they are easily defeated..." He paused, knowing it might be hard to describe how Necromancy works, "think of it this way. The art of Necromancy brings the soul of the deceased back into the body it once inhabited. Think of that soul as a puppeteer and the body as the puppet. Although you cannot destroy the strings, you can still harm and destroy the puppet. Maces work best, but almost any weapon would do. If you destroy enough of the body, limbs particularly, then the soul will depart back to the netherworld. Also, the puppeteers are being controlled by their... director, or Necromancer or Liche in this case. The dead must follow their master's orders." He paused for a bit, letting his explanation seep in, "as for how much of a threat they are, we are not sure how big it is, but we know that potentially it could be a very large threat to the whole world, except maybe those across the sea.... Currently though the dead that walk are only the guards, their masters still slumber in their tombs, and my people and I see to it that it stays that way."

Latona blinked and looked down at the fire again, "You mentioned they are being controlled... do you know who? How fast are these creatures..? The man I spoke to, related the story as though they were extremely quick and cunning; pulling people under the sand."
