It's 3729.

You're in the future. It's all like we dreamed. You can access the internet directly, without monitor or keyboard. You bond with it.
You live in a beautifully built city, with about 2 million other residents. It's on Venus. You have never seen war, but studied such things when you were in school. You have lived here all your life.

You have a car, you have an apartment. 401k, a degree in something, a good job. You're in high school, middle school, college. You practice martial arts, or you take ballet lessons on fridays, you go to the movies with your friends often, or you are a spendthrift. You are have strong political views - even in lacking any. You kind of like pets. You're lazy. You're an A-type. You've had the world handed to you since day one, and never looked back. You don't look up when on the sidewalk. Or maybe you've been doing that all your life. You are as unique as everyone else. Your style of dress is not special.

You have little real identity in short. You could be anything, but you will realize that you are boring. You have hardly lacked for needs. You are anybody on the street, because everybody is anybody. All attempts to stand out are irrelevant and provide only temporary means of satisfactory self-expression.
Your job is fun, your school is wonderful. Your life is great, you have said, and so you have always assumed.

2 hours from now you are going to meet someone who will probably turn your world upside down.

And everything is going to change.

Setting:

It's the future. Visual aids:

The great majority of the solar system is inhabited by humans now.

We mastered genetic engineering so as to weed out the immune-system problems Earth had centuries ago.
The result was an increased population such as never before. As Earth reached unbelievable population density, people migrated out into the oceans. As you might expect, conflicts erupted...
It wasn't until 2164 that space travel became a viable option. And humankind began to spread out into the stars.

Venus has been terraformed so as to become habitable for colonists, as well as other planets.
Jupiter and Saturn have monarchical governments, as well as control trade between the Inner and Outer Sol systems.
Earth, Venus, Mars, the moons of Jupiter and Saturn, as well as Neptune and Uranus', are inhabited.

Class stratifications are still present in some numbers.
Clothing is streamlined. Full mastery of genetics allows one the bodily modifications they wish - for a reasonable price - as well as synchronization with electrical/cybernetic equipment. Most people wire themselves so's to receive news as well as connect to wireless phone and internet. This hardly shows on the person.
Holographics, automation, and towering skyscrapers are the order of the day.
The internet is incredible, and transcends planetary boundaries.
Flying cars are commonplace, but most people have switched over to mass transiting.
It is a time of peace. Venus in particular has done well for itself. Religious factioning that occurred after the great shift does not affect it. The Trader's Union embargo - the current dispute Mars has with the Saturnian monarchy has had no impact on it's own economy. The government is utopian socialist for the most part.
The agrarianism that defined the 25th century dominates part of Venus. Big cities kept in check by childbirth legislation coupled with state-of-the-art terraforming and agricultural engineering make for a well-fed, well-controlled and healthy populace.
Venus has some military, but it is nothing compared to Earth or Mars.
Education is a high priority. Venusian schools produce some of the best trained businessmen, agricultural engineers, architecturalists, actors and diplomats.

People are content. They go about their business. Every day is no worse then the last, and sometimes it is better.
Or so they think.

...GALACTIC YEAR 3729...

The morning sun of June 14th, greets Provanost, eastern Venus's largest spaceport.
The city skyline towers far above you. Below you runs a gauntlet of runways and glowing airpath lines for transports. In the northern part of the city is city hall. Marketplaces can be found closer to the ground, and the Bazaar is located in the central hub. The spaceport proper is a hopskip away from that.
Transit routes run through almost every inch of the place.
((think of these larger cities like New York or Chicago times 5))

You sigh quietly as you are aroused from slumber by the blinds from your window folding back automatically, letting light spill in.

It's a day in the life...

Ash blearily looked at the clock before promptly throwing a pillow over his head, and burying himself in his covers.
This lasted about an hour, before he was at the stove, sleepily cooking up his breakfast.
By 9:30 he was walking past the security scanners at the academy and heading for his class. The yawn didn't go amiss by the class rep and she glared at him before he took his seat. He ignored her - he could too, at this hour he could care less, and she let him get away with it.

"Stand!"

Old Earth style schooling. Why had he ever chosen to come here.

"Bow!"

Oh that's right. Best part of the day.

"Sit!"

And now, the waiting game.
He was already fairly good at piloting. The mathmatics involved in space travel didn't escape him, however, he could just as do without that part of his schooling. The officer training instructors, formalities, the drilling... all part of the big shiny wrapper the academy had around itself. It was fine with him, but getting a ship, and heading offplanet...

"Mr. Mirlowe," intoned the voice.

Ah, the voice. This was already a typical day, and now more typical. He opted to shut off any independent movements and go on autopilot for the day.

"MR. MIRLOWE."

Unfortunately, not going to be the case.

"Yes sir. The answer would be the range lying in the third parsec and quadrant-"

"No Mr. Mirlowe. I'm afraid the class is over. The bell rang five minutes ago. "

How bout that.

And his day progressed similarly.

BRRRRRRRINNNNNGGGGGG

Standing at the academy substation, waiting for the transit to slip into the terminal, he wondered briefly if he was getting tired of his life.
Then he realized there wasn't much to be tired of anyway.
This would have amused him the entire trip home....

Except, it wasn't going to turn out quite that way.
