Come hither my brethren (and sisteren?) and listen closely for I shall not repeat it! (You can just re-read it, you doorknob!) The Harry Potter series (which sounds more like the adventures of a bear who enjoys putting flowers in pots) isn't a real (See the curviness? That means it's important...and looks friggin' awesome!) fantasy series. Seeing how my knowledge of the Harry Potter universe is limited to what I've seen in the movies,(which weren't all that great if you ask me...) there was still enough stuff to make my nerd-sense tingle...than burn. First off, they claim that wizards are born with inherent magical powers. Bah, everyone knows that Sorcerors are the ones born with unharnest magical powers! Wizards are born as any other dull as dishwater mortal. Wizards get their magic through encantations and other fun stuff like that. Secondly, no self-respecting wizard uses a wand unless it's to stir his soup. Wizards use staves! Everybody knows that, sheesh. And why do they call it "Hogwarts, school of witchcraft and wizardery", yet they have a "Defense against the Dark Arts class?" Isn't witchcraft the dark arts? And how come nobody ever uses a simple fireball spell? That would seem to solve a lot of problems they face. Well I'm done ranting...for now! Muh ha ha ha *hack* *cough* *phlem*

The truly sad part is that the young'uns are growing up on this.. X.x I'll admit though, I personally haven't read a single Harry Potter book, nor have I seen a Harry Potter movie.. And I wish to keep it that way ^.^ There's waaaaayyyy too much hype on it for me.. And I don't usually even pay attention to the amount of hype on something, hehe.
Wow, my rant was surprisingly short.. ^_^

If you take in all the merchandice, the bad movies, and the sixth book, then yeah, it's hype. But for the first five books, people got excited about them because they're good. And if it's a fantasy, then Rowling certainly has the right to give them wands, and whatnot, doesn't she? Unfortunately, she doesn't believe in magic...but hey, she's rich, she can do what she wants.

Yeah.. Harry Potter is just a bunch of stereotypical, 'magical' characters given poor background and yeah... I've seen the movies, and they haven't really appealed to me either. But I wouldn't call it Fantasy; it's more of Sci. Fi. mixed with a pinch of fantasy and stereotypes. I don't like how the actors act in the movie... it's just so.. sappy. *shrugs*

Ah, so I take it the hype didn't significantly increase till book 6? And that this little bookworm may actually make it through the first 5 books without twitching? Hehe.

Kitty Boi Kevin And the books are good because she does a good job creating a completely new world within our own. It's worth reading for that alone; letting the hype bother you is as bad as alienating yourself from society because it' the 'in' thing.
And besides, didn't anyone ever tell you to never judge a book by it's movie? You should all KNOW that Hollywood screws up just about every book they get their hands on...shame. Would you judge DL by a bad movie? Touche. And nicely said smile . Although it's not the fact that the book has a movie that prevents me from reading it.. It doesn't seem like a series of books I'd be interested in. (Hype just being one aspect of it all that I've mentioned wink .)

@ Kevin: And you feel your soul purpose is to contradict whatever I write is...? stare
(Edit: I wasn't able to finish my thought because I was late to class)
Did I say it was SciFi? NO I said it was a mix of sci fi and fantasy. I have read many sci fi books that have been VERY closely related to fantasy and in my opinion, the movies make it seem to have a sci fi edge.
I haven't read the books. Nor was I talking about the books.

If it were anyone else saying it, I'd contradict them too. 3nodding Because I like debating, and playing the Devil's advocate. And yes, you did say scifi, actually. It's the same thing as squares and rectangles...scifi can be fantasy, but fantasy isn't all scifi. It's not like there's any science IN HP, even, so it can't really be scifi, then...
And all I'm saying is that it's hardly fair for everyone to be bashing on it so much. Yes, the books are stereotypical; that's part of the appeal. And since the books are stereotypical, the movies are stereotypical. Yeah, the actors sucked. Cute faces, but no real skill. Yes, the effects were bad. But that shouldn't reflect on the quality of the story as it was meant to be.

Some aspects I thought were a little scientific, but that's my opinion. And sorry if I sounded a bit harsh. I'm a sick and non-plesent elf.

Hmmm im on my 4th harry potter book. They are pretty good, not something to go wild for like so many people seem to be doing, but well im a big fantasy person. And there is no way i can even see of comparing the two with each other, other then both have magic. They are totatly different areas from each other.
