We had a great quantity of OMGWTF this week with episode 5 in the series. Well, at least we did on the level of speed the writers advanced the relationship tangle at. I was surprised at them for it. This kind of thing didn't happen in other shows these people have worked on for a few more episodes.
Now on to the meat of the episode. Overall I thought the writing was very good (I confess, I was laughing unduly hard at the scene with Ashley and Henry in front of the nubbin enclosure). It still had its hitches, though, namely the cheesy line overkill (e.g. "I've got wood. For the fire." ). Sure, a good deal of them fit, but some, like the one in parentheses, were just hanging out in space with no purpose, breaking up the flow of the plot.
Also, there's something bugging me about the nubbins. Sure, the idea of a Tribble-Furby-Gremlin hybrid that makes people as libidinous as it is sounds pretty unnerving, but they could at least have had limbs with which to hold onto their prey, which would make the speedy exit of the predator creature more plausible. Sure, they have sharp teeth and hunt in great numbers, but seconds is not enough time to completely devour a creature that much bigger with just that. The nubbins look too much like scavenger creatures to bring down a hunter creature.
I think those would be my only criticisms of the episode. All in all this one had me laughing most of the time. I also liked the little side story about the young woman and her grandfather (I'm not the only one who has the weird genes skip a generation). Empathic Abnormals sound very cool. I hope we get to see that girl again. She and Ryan Robbins make a fun acting team.
Now that I've wrapped up my spiel for the week, have at it!
