Next Saturday, as you may or may not know, is the Festival of the Eye, the night when the moons eclipse one another in their peak of magical power. On that night, mages and wizards of all alignments go throughout their towns or villages, and offer small magical services in exchange for a gift of food, or a trinket. Children bake red, white, and black cookies, and dress up in pretend mage robes, and enjoy pretending to be powerful magic users as well.

So go out and celebrate the night of magical power. Wear your robes with pride, and if your parents ask you what the hell you're doing, say 'Can you nots see the Eye in the sky? 'Tis a powerful night for us!' Then cackle, grab some cookies and run.

I'll post more holidays as they come up.

The eleventh, this Thursday, is Visiting Day. biggrin Surprise surprise, it started as the kender holiday of "Hi, How Are You?" You spend the morning cleaning your house, and then go out and visit all of your friends.

Also, the thirteenth is the Feast of the Sea, sacred to Habbakuk. A good day to begin building your ship, or to christen it. There's a big-a** boat race, and everyone gets roaring drunk on rum and other good stuff. It's a two day celebration; first for the race, second for recovery.

Tradition is also to bring little gifts to the people you visit...in honor of it being originally a kender holiday, I like to make Sweet Kender Rolls as treats. Stories have it the Kit liked them so much, she'd pack a bag of them on Khell to fly into battle with. Can't raze and slaughter without that proper sugar rush, after all. The recipe for them is in More Leaves from the Inn of the Last Home, but if you like, I'll try to post it soon.

Kender Rolls

Varas Noituus got this recipe from an old kender, Panutack "Tack" Bunionhide. It is a common food among the kender, who rely on its doughnut-like sweetness to give them indefatigable energy. Varas found it particularly amusing that Kitiara would stuff her saddlebags with the little kender rolls before flying off to battle on the back of her dragon mount.

3/4 cup sugar
1 cup finely chopped walnuts, pecans, and filberts
1/4 cup warm water
1 package active dry yeast
3 cups flour
1 tsp salt
1/2 cup butter
3 eggs, slightly beaten
1 tsp vanilla
1/4 cup hot milk

In a small bowl, mix 1/2 cup of the sugar with the nuts and reserve this mixture for later. In another small bowl, dissolve yeast in warm water. In a large mixing bowl sift together 1 1/2 cups of the flour and salt. With a fork or pastry blender, cut in butter until the mixture resembles course meal. Pour in hot milk and stir quickly. Add yeast mixture, egg, vanilla, and milk. Stir until batter is smooth. Stir in the remaining flour, forming a stiff dough. Turn dough out onto a large square, clean kitchen towel. Bring the corners together and tie the tea towel with a string so it forms a bag to hold the dough. Place the cloth back in a pan of cold water deep enough to cover the back completely. Let dough rest for about 1 hour until the dough rises to the surface of the water.

Preheat the oven to 375 degrees Farenheit. Turn dough out from towel to a bowl. Scoop up heaping teaspoonfuls of the dough, dredge them in the sugar/nut mixture, and roll them into 'snakes' about 6 inches long and the width of a finger. (If the dough is too sticky, dredge again in nut mixture.) Twist the dough into an 'S' or 'U' shape and place on a lightly greased baking sheet to rise until light, about 30 minutes. Bake at 375 for 15 to 20 minutes, until golden brown; taking care not to blacken the bottom of the rolls. Yield: approximately 3 dozen.

Otik's Spiced Potatoes

Now, I've heard of adding other spices, too, in the sense that they aren't spicey-spiced, but spice-spiced. Other variants on the recipe include basil, oregano, thyme, parsley, paprika. Use your own favorite spices.

3-5 medium to large potatos (depending on how many are to be served)
1 stick of butter
1 medium onion, cut in large pieces
2 cloves of garlic, crushed
1-2 teaspoons ground cayenne pepper
1-2 teaspoons ground black pepper
Salt to taste

Scrub potatoes, and remove any eyes. Chop into 1/2-inch cubes, with the skins still on. Microwave until they start to soften while you prepare the other ingredients.

Melt the butter in the frying pan (or, traditionally, in an iron skillet,) and heat until sizzling. Add cayenne and black pepper to the melted butter and stir. Add the onions and garlic to the pan and cook until onions start to turn clear. Add the potatoes and stir to coat them thoroughly in the butter, then salt to taste. Cook until potatoes are nice and crisp.

Serves 3-4 commoners or 1 hungry warrior.

Note - For the full effect, serve in the pan with a large hunk of bread and cheese and a big tankard of strong ale.

Bardic Doughnuts

1 cup sugar, 1 cup milk
2 eggs beaten fine as silk.

Salt and nutmeg or lemon will do;
Baking powder, teaspoons two.
Now lightly stir the flour in.
Roll on pie board, but not too thin.

Cut in diamonds, twists or rings.
Drop with care the doughy things,
Into hot fat that swiftly swells
Evenly the spongy cells.

Watch with care the time for turning,
Fry them brown, just short from burning.
Roll in sugar, serve when cool;
This is a never-failing rule.

Bardic Apple Pie

"Pare green apples six.
A cup of sugar to it mix,
A bit of salt and two of flour,
It shall be done in just one hour.
If company doth come
Add one teaspoon cinnamon."

I have the same recipe, but I don't think that it calls for a microwave...In fact, if you boil the potatoes rather than microwaving them, they taste much better.
