xxxx× × ×xxxxSEVENTH Y E A R LESSONS A N D HOMEWORKxxxx× × ×xxxx

:: Note ::
In order to receive credit, participation and homework may not be the same as or similar to previous posts in the year they're from.
They should either choose a different specific topic, or showcase how a character's opinions have changed over time.

× Lesson One ×
Third Year Review

Beedle the Bard :: The Fountain of Fair Fortune
The Wizard and the Hopping Pot :: The Warlock's Hairy Heart

Discussion Prompts:
× One of the most important things to know about the Bard is that he was a controversial figure in his time, and is still considered to be one by some. His views were ahead of their time, radical for the period. Can anyone tell me why, or offer up any interesting information on the Bard? Or, if you have a question, feel free to ask.
× This story has all the makings of your classic fairy tale. It had trials and tribulations, characters with tragic backstories rising above their troubles, romance, and an ending meant to inspire. In spite of being by and large a positive story, it has often been attacked by certain subsets of the magical community. Can anyone guess why?
× The controversial nature of this particular story abounds; it has been written and rewritten time and time again by people who did not agree with its message and wished to bastardize it for their own gains. Can anyone tell me what about this story offended so many people?
× This story is, in a word, horrifying. It was meant to evoke feelings of fear and shock. This is a far cry from the Bard's other stories, which are typically considered to be much more light-hearted. It has been suggested that the rather graphic nature of the story was intentional; the Bard meant to shock his readers so that they would always remember the story, to ensure that the lesson it held stuck with them. Can anyone tell me what the purpose of this particular story is?

Homework Assignments:
× Write a short essay on Beedle and how public opinion of muggles during his lifetime may have led to controversy concerning his stories. Offer your opinion on the perspectives of both the Bard and his peers.

× Write a short essay on Beedle and how public opinion of muggles during his lifetime may have led to controversy concerning his stories. Offer your opinion on the perspectives of both the Bard and his peers.
× Write a short essay on the phrase 'to have a hairy heart' and why you believe the heart became so cold and twisted in its years of seclusion.

× Lesson Two ×
Fourth Year Review

The Difference Between History and Mythology
The Quintaped :: Unicorn Blood :: The Sorting Hat

Discussion Prompts:
× Share your personal favorite mythological story with the class. Discuss why our ancestors may have believed it, and what contributed to loss of belief in it.
× Do you believe it is possible for the Quintaped to be a family of Transfigured wizards? Provide evidence to support your opinion.
× Discuss whether or not you believe in the curse of the blood and what you believe the ill effects of drinking said blood might be.
× The hat adamantly claims to've never gotten a sorting wrong; however, history is full of examples of seemingly questionable sortings. What do you believe contributed to the hat's odd choices in these instances?

Homework Assignments:
× Put yourself in the position of an ancient scholar, and write a short 'myth' regarding a common, everyday occurrence, such as the phases of the moon or a thunderstorm.
× Mythology is often intended as a cautionary tale. Write a short essay describing what lesson the originator of this myth might have intended the listener to learn.
× Mythology is often intended as a cautionary tale. Write a short essay describing what lesson the originator of this myth might have intended the listener to learn.
× Recount your own sorting, and discuss what traits you believe contributed to your placement.

× Lesson Three ×
Fifth Year Review

The Founders of Hogwarts :: The Chamber of Secrets
The Deathly Hallows :: The Boy Who Lived

Discussion Prompts:
× We are now many centuries removed from the actual historical reality of the school's founders. How do you suppose their reputations have been changed or embellished over time?
× We now know the existence of the Chamber of Secrets to be very real. However, it's likely that over time, details regarding its existence may change or be forgotten. Which details do you think will be forgotten, and which do you believe will prevail? How do you suppose the story will be embellished?
× If you believe that the story is true and the Hallows exist, where do you suppose they are now? Presumably Harry Potter possesses the cloak, but what about the other two?
× Think of what you know about Harry Potter, and how much of it is fact versus how much is speculation. How do you suppose his story might be embellished further, the less people remember of his actual life?

Homework Assignments:
× Choose the founder for any house but your own. Write a short essay about what we know about them, comparing and contrasting known fact with legend and rumor.
× Research and write an essay detailing another myth regarding the construction of Hogwarts castle.
× If given the opportunity, which of the Hallows would you take for your own? Consider the Tale of the Three Brothers when forming your thoughts and write a short essay outlining them.
× Imagine yourself in the place of Harry Potter, and speculate on the sorts of rumors people might tell about you, based on only a surface view of your own life.

× Lesson Four ×
Sixth Year Review

The Differences Between Muggle and Magical Mythology
Crossovers Between Muggle and Magical Mythology
Mythology of Ancient Cultures :: Famous Muggle Myths

Discussion Prompts:
× Consider a myth you know, either native to Muggle or Magical myth, and consider it from the opposite angle; what details would a person from the other side be able to explain, and which aspects would confound them?
× The lesson outline only goes over a few broad examples of the shared traits and history of mythology between wizards and muggles. What are some others not covered here? Or, what are some more specific details, or additional examples, of those provided?
× Is there a certain ancient culture whose mythology you are familiar with? Share what you know about them with the class.
× Choose one of the myths you're familiar with and give the class a more thorough account of the story, or voice your opinions on the story a classmate has shared.

Homework Assignments:
× Write a short essay comparing and contrasting muggle and magical culture and how myths are derived from each.
× Consider stories you were told as a child that you now know to be just that, stories, but that you believed in when you were young. If you grew up in a magical household, consider if there is a muggle equivalent. If you grew up in a muggle household, consider the reverse.
× Choose an ancient culture you are unfamiliar with. Research an aspect of their mythology, such as a story or an entity, and write about it.
× Research a myth not discussed in class and write a short essay on its themes.

This country was founded based on religious freedom, not "under god". And in terms of this being "Socialism", doesn't it make more sense that instead of having to worry about paying the bills, its just out of your paycheck when you get it? Then the money you have you can use for food or whatever else. In terms of taxing the rich more, if you can afford to drive a porsche, you should be able to pay higher taxes.

I agree with Sykke. Yes, this country was based on 'religious' freedom eventually. But anyone that frowned on Christianity, or Catholicism was killed in the beginning. The founders killed Indians, the original inhabitants, took their land by force. becuase they believed differently. There is no such thing as 'freedom' there never was. This country was founded on lies. They might have had good intentions at the start, but they failed to uphold what their first ideals were.

This country was supposed to be under God, was founded because Christians were outcasted, that had different ideals from the Catholic church. So they founded America to have religious freedom under God.

The people who first came to America came to escape religious persecution in Europe. When it stopped being Colonies and it became the United States of America, it was established from our founding fathers, who were CHRISTIAN men, that state must be separate from church.

Conservative Republicans talk about their fear of Socialism and communism, and all having to live by what the government wants. However, it seems like you want to make this a country ruled by religion, and that would subject everyone who does not believe as we do to our beliefs. The religious government would make ours a christian society, that everyone would have to abide by. That, is a form of communism and I do not believe our founding fathers wanted that, and that is why they separated church and state.

*nods* But our founding fathers still murdered innocent people because they did not comform to their ideals, that is not Christian. Either way, this country is going farther and farther away from God's will. Don't expect it to get any better.

The history of Christianity is full of the slaughter of people who did not believe. Because of that, it is our job to show people how we have changed.

Also a side note: You said this country is going farther and farther away from God's will. What makes you think that America is God's country?

All the land, and everything in it, and every person is HIS. Whether we acknowledge it or not.

Hebrews 4:13 (New International Version)

13Nothing in all creation is hidden from God's sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account.

I know that, but why do a lot of people seem to think that America is like, God's Favorite? And to force people to live by the religious beliefs of one not their own is not right.

God also calls us to be messengers of His word. Witnessing.

Forcing people to follow what we believe is not Witnessing. Is is also not the way of God.

Nope. But having patience and being kind, to make them ask how we stand out is witnessing. It's not a matter of force. It's letting God's will take over.

... Actually, brother, bats see just as well as humans. They just are hypersensitive to the sunlight.

Thanks for that. It's very true.

This country was found by those who were persecuted by the church in Europe. Have you heard of the "Dark Ages"? That's when those who preached the Bible were killed. Those that were getting tired of the persecution wanted to go to land where they could worship God the way that they wanted to. So, yes, this country was founded under God.

America is considered to be a "Christian" nation and why do you think that Iraq, Iran and all the other Arab countries hate us. They hate what America stands for. The Lord has blessed America because we have blessed the Jews because the Jews from the very beginning are "God's people". The Bible states in a promise to Abraham that if anyone blesses them then God will bless them but if anyone curses them then God will curse them. Once this country goes against the Jews, it will be all over and God will no longer bless this nation.

The Bible does tell us to be a "Witness". Those that are truely "born again" go out witnessing telling other what Jesus did for them. They are not to force others to believe like they do. They are just pointing out to them that if they don't accept Christ as their personal savior to save them from their sins, then, they will spend all eternity in hell. Everyone has a free will. God does not force his way on anyone. He is a patient God but his patience is running out and this world is slowly coming to an end.

If you look at this country, your freedoms and rights are slowly being taken away. Just go out and try to talk bad about any race without being looked down on. What about the right to bear arms, like the Constitution says? That right is slowly being taken away as well. Talk about anyone elses religion, you get looked down on as well.

One day, there will be a one world government, one world money system and a one world church. That time is slowly coming. The writing is on the wall.

Inuyasha, I must say: you did make a convincing argument there, so I thank you for it.

Quick little things I believe you should've just checked:

1. The Arab countries hate America because of its support of Israel. Now, does that mean we should take away our support so as to avoid conflict? Absolutely not.

2. This one is to styledcliff: First of all, it was not until 1952 that the phrase "Under God" was put into the pledge of allegiance. It was put in so as to make a point of "distinguishing" ourselves from the "Godless, communist, atheist red countries". I'd like to see some examples of how things get worse as a direct result from not using God in the law from you styledcliff.

I'd like to say that I do believe that religion has a place in our society. Granted, even though we know that God is real and Christ is his son, what we have is still a belief. Now, if we begin to have it so our beliefs run parts of the system, we become just like Hitler when he used his power to make his beliefs law. I don't believe I need to state the results of those actions...

About Inuyasha and your argument about how our rights are being taken away. The reason why it is looked down upon when one makes a remark about race is because it is demeaning the minority races in America who have suffered a great deal in history at the hands of white Americans. The right to bear arms? Did you know that there are three times more accidental shootings in a home than there are of shooting an intruder. Take away the guns, you take away the problem. That is my opinion.
