Well, I know pretty much how I am going to make the costume.
I'll post pictures of its progress once I have all of the fabric etc. I am going to probably wear black leggings and a cut up black t-shirt with the red bits and ribbon pieces sewn on. I CANNOT do 5-6 inch stilettos because: a.) they're ridiculously expensive, and b.) I've never walked in pointy heels before (I've gone down the garden in my mum's old ones that are about an inch high and I buckle in them easily - with 5-6 inch stilettos I'd likely break my ankles). Boy, I hear that! I once went with no-heel boots for a costume of a character that was supposed to have 3-inch heels for the same reason. Could never walk in heels, period. No one got uppity about it with me at all.
And, RE: the boob size thing, Hypno...
The general sense in the cospaying community as far as body type and cosplaying a character is "who the hell cares? As long as you're comfortable with it, do whatever character you want." When it comes to body type, the priority is generally to make the costume look good
on you; make the costume fit the body rather than make the body fit the costume. It comes out a
lot more successfully that way. Trying to fake a certain body-type almost
always ends in tears because it's usually inconsistent from one wearing to the next, making the costume itself look like it doesn't fit right.
It's why I don't even attempt cross-play any more. I can't flatten my cantaloupes to the same flatness from one wearing to the next making the costume just right in one instance (plus, I usually can't breathe worth a damn) and too tight the next. I have
one crossplay and he's pretty much retired (much to the chagrin of having spent $40 on the wig for him) because of it.
In other convention-related news, my steampunk interactive mystery group, Steam Century, is going to be at DaishoCon here in Wisconsin in a week and a half. Weird thing is, we're listed on the convention website as a guest. It's really a weird feeling, to be going to a convention as a
guest. Especially since I'm not sure I deserve it; I'm just there having fun!
I pondered entering their costume contest, but after some chatting with the guy who is going to be running it over the convention's message boards, I decided to see how he does this year, first. He submitted a panel to their staff wherein he was going to spend his time basically ripping on what he considers to be "bad cosplayers." Now, granted, there are some really
lousy cosplayers out there, but you don't make fun of them behind their backs, especially if you're going to be judging costumes at a contest the next day. I have the sneaking suspicion the guy is a closet a*****e and is giving in to his true nature.
