Man, I think the whole reason Nation wasn't a DW book was because the world being round was integral to the plot. Okay, yes, not exactly a comedy, but I totally ate it up. This is the official thread in which to squee (or not so squee) about pTerry's latest literary gem.

As I said in another thread here, I find it interesting to note how, after their collaboration on Good Omens, Neil Gaiman's works got progressively lighter in mood and Terry Pratchett's works got increasingly philosophical and deep. I can't say I'm sorry in either case - the resulting titles have been, by and large, some of my all-time favorites.

Any road, here's to Nation, the only book I've run across anywhere that can establish an entire cultural subtext with a one-page intro. So well-written, I briefly considered establishing Imoism.

Cheers, Mr. Pratchett. You've done it again.

It was a bit slow to get into the flow, if you know what I mean. Good, other than that, but it took a bit too long to get interesting

See, I was hooked right from the single-page cosmology, so I can't agree with you. Also, the mutiny and similar were a lovely touch. I need to look up a picture of a pantaloon bird, just so I can figure out what such an ungainly creature looks like really. The description is riotously compelling, I think.

In a technical sense, it's spot on. His descriptions are just as vivi and interesting as ever, and the wolrd is great. But I just didn't get fully hooked till later

Fair enough. I think I might have been a bit more involved had the story led off with Mau instead of yon plague, but then the timing would have been off.

You know, I just *finally* caught, on my most recent read-through, that Daphne's only 13? And isn't there for more than a couple of months? She seemed somehow older, and it seemed like a lot more time passed. Of course, in busy times, that is how things tend to feel - all piled up, like. But still. Weird. I kept picturing Emma Watson, who is decidedly nowhere near 13.

Aye, but she still looks decidedly kid-like.
