I am sure some of you have heard me refer to something called a character journal. This is a tool I created (though I am sure others have too) that can help you get deeper into your character's mindset. It can really help your character to grow and seem even more real!
Basically, the short of this is, a character journal is exactly what it sounds like. It is a journal that your character would keep, if they kept one. Now I don't write a journal myself, but I still think it is a good idea for a character to keep one.
When writing a character journal, the setup is up to you. Set it up however you want it to be, or how you character would. If you character is a preppy girl, she would probably throw pink and flowers all over the place. They would talk about boys and maybe have personal comments on some of the people that are with in the role play. Maybe they secretly love the rogueish boy that was sent to juvy two times. Maybe they really love that nerd they pick on all the time, but will never show it for popularity sake?
A magic user would probably keep track of how spells are cast, what new spells that they are thinking of, and maybe catalog events along the journy.
A healer might keep a dry sounding personal record of recent herbs they found and what illnesses they have treated. They might have some personal thoughts on life and death, and how to mend the next broken arm. They might be trying to mix a new curative to prevent infection.
Either way, you can find out a lot about you character by maintaining one of these. It also can help keep yourself and everyone else on the same page as to what happened and when, with a little personality thrown in. You don't need every detail that has happened, just what your character would mark down as important. Private thoughts and such are good for character development as well.
