Okay, so, in a classic heroes story, the hero usually has certain characteristics or events/obstacles throughout their journey. In Avatar, Aang is given the title of the hero, but I find he doesn't fit the criteria - yes, he saves the world, but he never grows or sacrifices (conciously, anyway) or anything of that sort.
Personally, I think Zuko is more of the hero. He, out of all the characters, has the most depth and development and, well, heroic attributes. He struggles through decisions and makes huge sacrifice throughout the show (namely giving up the life of a prince and love of his nation/family so he can end the war and join Aang's side). He grows from a selfish, confused, angry teenager fighting for his father's love, to a self-sacrificing hero who finally has a clear idea of what he believes to be right and wrong.
But that's just my opinion. What do you guys think?

I think both of them are toolbags.
Aang is, as you said, clearly NOT a hero.
I was voting on the poll before I read what you said When I saw Zuko I was like...
"WUUUT?!?!?"
I don't see him as even close to a hero, but that is just my opinion. ><

But it's all a matter of opinion. Who do you think of as the hero?

Hm...not sure bout' that. I think.... Katara and Sokka. ^^
They were the people who gave everyone hope about the war, they were the ones who stuck by Aang even when they wanted to see their dad, even though Sokka messed up a bit there, Katara stayed (mostly) loyal, and they were also the ones who found Aang, which lead to peace in the scared world.
But thats just what I think. ^^

In other guilds, everyone blows up at each other.
In this one, I love how it's so non-hateful heart

I agree about Zuko. He gave up/lost a lot more than Aang, His relationship with Iroh, the non-existent respect from his father and sister, and his girlfriend. And Aang would have lost the fight if Zuko had never taught him firebending. I understand that Aang lost his family and friends but he ran away.
