Hi All!

Help!!! My nephew rescued a stray kitten from being run-over by a car. He did not, however, have permission to keep a cat. So . . . I now have a baby kitty in my upstairs shower.

Ok. Don't be mad. If you knew how strongly allergic to cats I am, you would be amazed that I haven't had to visit the emergency room today. (Maybe Rapid Care tomorrow ~ but still that's not Emergency prices).

I've put in: a box with a blanket, a water bowl, baby-kitty food bowl, a litter box (w/ plain Jonny Cat), and several toys. Plus my dog & I are pretty much constantly hovering around the baby. Sometimes, out of the kitten's line of site, but still obsessively.

Oh! And s/he's 2.25 pounds.

What should I do for him/her? We're going to the vet on Friday. But I am "dog people", so I don't know how much exercise & playtime is needed for the little one. You know - that kind of stuff.

(S/he's sleeping now.)

Thanks for your insights!

gonk Depends how old the kitten is really, as long as its eating what youve given it and hes warm i dunno what else you can do i have no idea when it comes to things like this. Can you not take it to a rescue centre?
Hope it all works out and you dont need a trip to hospital for your allergies!

Aaaaw! I'm badly allergic to cats, too, but AWWWW! xD I hope your allergies don't send you to the hospital.

Like Anjel said, if he's eating the food and he's warm and dry, there's really nothing special you need to do. He should be fine until he sees the vet in a couple days. Poor baby! I hope you find a good home for it.

Thanks for the well-wishes. I'll keep you posted.

hmm. Should I change those pics to be a little bigger? I didn't realize that "small" would be quite this small?

LOL! Eat the baby kitty! He'd better not!!!

That is a really cute kitten, but it is hard not to admire them, right? I mean, they are designed to be cute. . .

He tries to eat my neighbours labradors hes such a badass! Because of that he has torn both ears, lost a large chunk of his chest and has broken his tail in 3 places sweatdrop
Pet insurance is my saviour! Thing is hes actually really friendly and affectionate, leaves me dead things in my shoes as presents, meows loudly at me when he comes in just to make sure i notice him and pay him attention.
But yeah a kitten would be nothing more than an snack xd

My last cat used to always greet me at the door with meows and snuggles when I came home from work. 4laugh

Needless to say, I pretty much shattered the first day I came home after I lost her, and was still expecting her to be there at the door. crying

Kittens are active by themselves. Just play with him/her, ask vet to tell more and help kitten to get his toys back under the sofa and other furniture. They love to chase things like paper balls and plastic eggs from for example Kinder chocolate eggs.

Check a simple and easy to access place for sharpening claws. At this point kitten is quite surely too small to cause serious damage, but it's good to show from early age that where to scratch and where not. In our house it is three carpets and no others. Just let kitten use carpets and if there is some too thin or expensive, just take it away for a while. Adult cat understands if one carpet/table/window/etc. is forbidden, but kitten doesn't.

Cats learn as well as dogs. So same methods apply to both. Difference is that cat may hear, understand and decide not to take orders every time. With my cat, he wont co-operate if he thinks that he has better idea of what and how things are done. But Filip is adult and you have there a kitten. Just don't scare him/her. mrgreen

For commanding and teaching, rather use emotion words and gestures. Raise a finger, but don't tap kitten on the head. (That'd be taken as gesture of play) Use voice, that small creature can't misunderstand.

My cat is smart veteran from streets and loves humans. He knows he's not a kitten anymore and everything but small, but still this scarred and manly Uncle Filip cuddles like a baby. And I can't argue with him like with other cats. Raising a hand - to show that I'm aggressive or annoyed isn't working. He is always up to fight things straight and not even thinking of backing up. But understands talking very well. I've dragged that cat away from trying to sneak attack on a bum.

He might turn out to be a big, gruff daddy-cat instead. biggrin

Too bad I'm way too far too. Our cat has been officially babysitter for kittens and human babies several times. xd

Hi again! I thought I'd better write you all an update because you are all so nice. Thanks for all your tips & well-wishes. (& I'm open to more as you think of them . . . )

Vet said that the kitty looks to be in perfect health and that he is a boy! So, he is dubbed "Solembum" after the were-cat in the Inheritance Series (Eragon, etc).

We've settled into a better living situation too. That is that Solembum is in the garage with a heating pad, litterbox, and whole bunches of toys. (The car is now outside for a while, while the kitty learns not to climb up underneath!) In the space that the car usually occupies, I've set up my plastic furniture that can be hosed off. Then we spend several hours a day out there with him.

Whenever we are not visiting with him, he climbs onto his "cozy blanket" and goes to sleep. He does not play with his toys when no one is around to observe. This makes me sad, but doesn't surprise me because both my nephew and I never would play by ourselves when we were babies either.

We all are pleased with the arrangements and have already become one happy family. biggrin Yeay!!! & Phewwww! biggrin

Ok. Have a wonderful Halloween Hysteria! (I just finished all the camps a few minutes ago.)

P.S. The only Fart I've seen out there, in the event, is Gallo. But I couldn't chat because I was an enemy at the time that I noticed.

So true! Mine would look at me defiantly as she was about to do something she knew she wasn't supposed to, do it anyway, then look at me again and run off and hide. >.< The squirt bottle technique did absolutely nothing. xD

You might think about getting a small pot of cat grass for him as he gets older; I'm not sure about kittens, but adult cats do need some amount of greenery in their diet, especially if they're indoors all the time, and most places sell the cat grass kits pretty cheap. This also keeps them out of your house plants. 3nodding

Nice thing! Cats do actually sleep most of the time, 16-18 hours per day. I think that's just normal, not many kitten play alone or even adults.

Milk, without lactose. I heard only few years ago that cats shouldn't really drink basic milk and its not good to them (lactose-intolerance). You you have a collar of any kind yet? It's pain in the a** to teach it later. Kittens don't mind it much and take collars easy also later.

Sir Filip is very well-behaved and stubborn gentleman, and most of time I don't actually know how much he understands. He constantly surprises me - but I do spend a lot time alone with him.
I ish crazy cat person who constantly talks to animals.

Trish, I think that's is because cat knew it was you who did it and doesn't believe that anything you do might really harm it. Stubborn cat needs to think that the deed or thing itself caused harm and not human. 'What's it for me' is basic stone of cat logic. biggrin
