So, now that we've moved past the original stuff, we're into the new. That means shorter commentary from yours truly and hopefully a lot more from all of you. Let's begin.
I have to say, the concept of the folding man isn't the first "abnormal" thing to jump to mind, so I give the writers much credit for thinking outside the box (or around it, between boxes, etc.). I also give them credit for the chemistry (I can't verify it myself, so if anyone can, please feel free). I actually liked this episode very much and I even think that it may not have worked so well in a web series because of all the exterior shots. I'm thinking it's because the other scripts were modified versions of something else, the modifications being to both the format of the episodes and the story. This one was fresh and it was definitely easy to see that. It gave this third episode a much better feel.
Now for something that will sound completely superficial: What the heck was Helen wearing? Did anyone else notice the abrupt costuming jump between the first two episodes and this one? This could just be my premature stereotypical-old-timer-type complex on change coming out, but it seemed kind of wrong to me. I listened to and watched a lot of cast and crew interviews from the web series, so I gained a lot of insight into how everything was designed. I do mean everything; Amanda Tapping was asked a question in an older interview about how she compared to her character, Helen Magnus. Amanda even went as far as touching on fearlessness in fashion sense; she talked about how Helen could wear something completely odd and of mismatched style (her example was "Converse shoes with a flapper dress" as something hypothetical) without caring how she looked even if it was weird (and how she herself couldn't do that, but this is beside my point). In the web series, Helen's dress sense is a wee bit more conservative and/or businesslike than what they had her wearing in this episode. I can imagine why the change was so sudden, too: They weren't reusing webisode scenes in this one and thus had no need to imitate anything. They've even eliminated the crimson streak in Helen's hair that she had in the web series, since Amanda is using her real hair now (which she dyed brown. For some reason I feel pained by that).
As for acting props, I give them to the guy playing Nomad (who I need to look up the name of). It takes some really good acting to pull off withdrawal. Not everyone can do it, so I praise his performance. Feel free to disagree, please. We need more discussion in these review threads.
Another bit I want to touch on is how glad I am to see more of Henry Foss, a.k.a. Ryan Robbins. In my book, he is also one of those fantastic actors. I've seen him in great shows like Stargate Atlantis, Battlestar Galactica and Psych (I like Vancouver productions...). In each of those he's done a bang-up job. He even pulled off a very believable "shady character" (as in druggie style again) as the janitor in the one episode of Psych he appeared in. He even threw a mini tantrum in BSG. In the webisodes he showed up a grand total of three or four times, but was mentioned in the third in passing. He was even attacked by the Morrigan in the final webisode and he really looked like he was in pain. I hope to see him show up as more than just that guy in the lab later in the series.
And there you have it. Please, please add in anything you think should be discussed and even start up a debate if you wish. Anything goes as long as there's logic and evidence behind it.
