This is one of the most often asked questions by individuals and it is one of the most significant questions grappled with by philosophers and theologins alike.
Why are we here?
Or to go from the more general to the more specific:
What is my purpose in life?
It is frustrating to know that one has talents, or a story to tell, or even nothing that one feels of worth at all to give, and not know how to apply it or what to do about it.
General answers like: We are here to glorify God are, unfortunately, less than satisfactory. Why? Because they are a general answer when those who ask the question are looking for a specific, personalized answer.
What am I to do? How can I do something special? What separates me from the 6 billion other people on this planet? What makes me of particular value?
Everyone can glorify God. What can I do that is special?
Is this not the crux of the dissatisfaction with general answers? They leave us unfulfilled because we want to be more than just another face in the crowd.
So, what do you live for? What is your passion in life? What really touches your heart?

... I don't know what God's purpose is in my life... but He put a great love for children in my soul. I'm just trusting Him to show me what He wants me to do with that.

That's huge! I suspect that you have real insight to bring into that too.
It's interesting that you share that because I've had a great love for women across the globe placed in my heart, my sisters in Iraq and Rwanda and Drafur who suffer and are enslaved loom large in my heart. Single mothers, rejected and reviled, widows, these are all my sisters.
I find it exciting to hear what God is laying on other's hearts because it reaffirms to me that we each have a unique place to fill and that God knows each one of us better than any other being ever will.

smile It's nice to know I'm not the only person here who feels that way. I can't remember when I started to realize I had a call to help kids.
... My prayer is that you suceed in your goals, and that God blesses you in helping our sisters in Christ. Thank you for your inspiration.

Hmm.... I don't know what exactly I'm meant to do, but I know it'll probably require a lot of patience. Why? I've been told that I have more patience than most anyone that anyone seems to know. Don't know what that could possibly mean, but I guess it's something...

Maybe this might put things in perspective.
The reason we are here first of all is to make a decision. We all are given a free will and a decision to accept what Jesus did for the whole world on the cross by dying for our sins or reject him. Unfortunately sad to say, those who reject him don't know what they are getting into. It means "eternal damnation" forever and ever in a place of fear, torment, pain, etc.
For those who accept Jesus' payment for sins and ask him to come into their heart, then the reason they are here after they make that decision is to glorify God. Glorifying God is not only going to church, etc but it is also being his servant and doing what he commands. He has asked that we spread the gospel to every creature. How we live our lives can also glorify God.
When a person who says that they are a "christian" and uses God's name in vain, are they truely a "christian"? Personally, I don't think so. How could a "christian" use the Lord's name in vain and not feel guilty? The Bible says that anyone who uses His name in vain is an enemy of God.
