Give me envy, give malice, give me your attention...
MY YEAR: NATHEN & MATTEW LEONE
Words: Dan Slessor
SO, BOYS, GOOD YEAR?
Nathan: "It's got to be the best year of our lives so far with everything that's happened- we were able to travel the world and meet a million different people, it's been amazing."
Matthew: "It was such an adventure, and our concern has always been when we got into adulthood how we were gonna manage to maintain adventure throughout our entire lives, and this year provided us with just that."
WHAT WAS THE HIGH POINT?
Nathan: "Without a question getting the Best Internatonal Newcomer Kerrag! Award, We were in the middle of the Projekt Revolution tour when we heard that we had won. That's one of the more prestigious awards out there because the people who support the magazine vote for it which is really kind of validated everything thta we're doing."
Matthew: "We've been fans of Kerrang! since we were kids- we would import that magazine. So to be embraced and chosen by the audience was such an incredible feeling."
AWW, GUYS! SO WHO WAS THE MOST FAMOUS PERSON YOU RUBBED SHOULDERS WITH?
Nathan: "It would probably be all the Linkin Park guys. We've done six tours across the US with these no-name bands- and we were one of them- and 20 to 50 kids would come to those shows and some of the bands on those tours had these huge egos, these, like, rock star ******bags. When we got on the Projekt Revolution tour, the iggest, most pleasent surprise was that the Linkin Park guys were just so humble and nice."
Matthew: "MCR's Gerard Way. He's amazing and surpassed any expectaions I could have had of him. He's humble, down to earth and very artistic and I admire his career very much."
WHAT WAS THE FUNNIEST THING THAT HAPPENED THIS YEAR?
Nathan: "We were in Orlando and we ended up staying at one of the guys from N*Sync's house, and he had a party one night and about one or two drinks in, our drummer [Dan Torelli] passed out and we didn't see him the rest of the night. When we went to the van the next morning he was in there wearing another dude's clothes, and he had no memory of how that happened!"
DONE ANYTHING THAT GOT YOU IN TROUBLE?
Matther: "We were at a rest stop when we were travelling because we had to use the gentleman's room for a number two. I went into on stall and I could see our drummer's shoes under the divider in the stall next to me. So after my first wipe, I put the tiolet paper on the floor and nudged it over into his stall. I expected him to shout at me but all that happened was he nudged it back into my stall with his shoe. So I finished up and I got outside and I saw our drummed standing there. So I did that to a perfect stranger and I had to high-tail it out of there before there was trouble!"
HAD ANY WEIRD RUN-INS WITH FANS?
Nathan: "When we did the Projekt Revolution we were the only band in a van, and we had to change clothes in there. At one point I was absolutely nude and there was a mother and two young daughters taking pictures of me through the window! I was just so strange that it was a mom and her kids, something was definitly off there!"
HAVE YOU LEANT ANYTHING NEW ABOUT YOURSELVES?
Nathan: "That I have bad anxiety issues. We spend a lot of time talking toeverybody after every show and then when you're always travelling you have literally zero space to yourself... I've learned that cacn be pretty hard."
Matthew: "I'm a rescuer, I like to save people and I don't think that's very healthy because I've learned that by overextending myself and giving too much of myself away there's nothing left for me. That's an alarming realisation. I'm starting to wean people off of their dependecy on me and trying to start saying no to things."
WHERE WILL SANTA FIND YOU TWO ON CHRISTMAS DAY?
Nathan: "We usually have Christmas with our dad but he just moved house. We have three sisters and I guess one of them will be hosting Christmas and we'll just go and kick it with the family, exchange gifts, play games and hang out, it's always a good time."
Matthew: "For New Year, Nathan and I have this best friend who lives in this surreal world! So there'll probably be a collection of eight to 10 of us at his house and we'll do things we shouldn't speak of... And then we'll play weird games and build forts."
...Give me envy, give me malice, baby give me a break
