I made them by taking regular buttons and filing grooves into the sides with a mini hand saw and then painted them with metallic paint.
They are now on a pair of arm warmers I crocheted out of this delicious butterscotch yarn, adorning a facinator hat that I made, and on a crocheted collar neck piece thing.

That is a lovely idea! I'm in the middle of crocheting a pair of spats at the moment and I think buttons like that would look grand on them.

That is genius! -goes to find a large button- I have a hat that I've needed to add gears to, and this is the perfect way to do it.

I'm actually from the US, I found the handsaw at wal-mart, but I bet any hardware store would have one...
edit: I do the vast majority of my shopping at wal-mart as I am by and large a nocturnal creature.
