Raistlin of Krynn Captain

As a huge Raistlin fan, I feel this is a good character to start character discussions with. For starters...Raistlin is the epitome of what is thought of as a villain, yet we like him. Why is that? Is it his ambition? His thirst for all knowlege regarding his profession? Or is it the way he reflects the dark side within all of us?

Hmm... Well, I know I admired him while reading the books because he still trusted his brother to aid him while needed... It was a semi-drawback when after he gained his black robes, he didn't necessarily pay Caramon back.. but it's to be expected after he -did- kill him during the 'towers test'.
It always seemed to me that he had a soft side no matter how dark and sinister he became. Having him in the books added a nice edge to the story. whee

I find the reason I like Raist is because, though he'd never admit it to himself, he does care about his brother. As stated many times in "Brothers in Arms" Raist feels sick whenever he thinks about what he did during the tests...he knows why he did it, but it sickens him. When he switches to the Black Robes, I feel that he cuts that part of his life off from himself so he doesn't hurt his brother.

I find that Raist is just horribly, horribly bitter. I mean, come on...Children who go through THAT much awful stuff in their young years usually end up with some pretty hefty emotional baggage. Shall we list them?
~Born the weaker of two twins; this will always give him something to negatively compare himself too. neutral ~Being weaker, he couldn't play games like normal children, and since he couldn't bond with them the normal way, he became the outsider, the one they all picked on. ~Being picked on so much gave him an unpleasent demeanor, which alienated him from adults, even while he was still young. ~Still, the comparison between him and Caramon set him apart from any girlfriends as he ages. Who would take a skinny runt when the handsome twin is so easy? ::snicker:: ~Using slight-of-hand tricks FURTHER sets him apart. Why make friends with a kid if he can snatch your wallet in a flash? ~And then he found magic, and was psyched, but having an idiot of a teacher embitters him, and makes him impatient and in a hurry to learn more. ~The burning lambskin inflames a questionable ego. Like throwing gasoline on the proverbial fire, hm? ~Getting his wannabe girlfriend stolen by his BROTHER--do I even need to elaborate on how much more bitter that made him? ~Finding the Tower at Wayreth, taking the Test....rock on. But then he went and 'killed' Caramon. That's gonna leave some mental scarring. ~Shiney gold skin that only a dragon or a magpie would love, nasty, phlegmy cough....oh, that'll make him cheerful. Sure. Further reliance on Caramon as a result--the beginnings of evil stirrings deep within his congested chest. ~Again, NO ONE trusts him on their adventures. The quiet cranky guy in the corner sure isn't making friends or earning any trust....
And here's the finale. ~'Oh, I've got unimaginable magical power in the DragonOrb...why not steal it? Okay! So long, f*ckers, thanks for nothing!' And then he flies off, leaving them to their deaths.
Why do I like him? Because evil is just so hawt. And I happen to have the attention span of a magpie, drawn to shiney things. And because I like white hair. heart

See, the thing is, I never really saw Raistlin as a villian. Ever. Even when fighting his brother, i never saw it as Raist was evil. The way that Weis often depicted him was that Raistlin was just a character who chose to go a certain path. From that sense, the reason I always like him was because he could be so... "evil" against the fact that his heart was still pushing for better things. A dynamic and round character, to say the least.

Yeah, I can definitely think of people eviller...but he got to the point where he enjoyed causing pain in others, and just didn't care, so I think that pushes him up a bit past 'disgruntled.' Like the whole Crysania bit...and then leaving never-healing burns on Dalamar's chest....ouch.

I quite liked Raistlin. I kind of felt sorry for him when Caramon would over shadow him as a kid being that Caramon was the stronger one. I always knew he would go over to the darker side... Oh I love mysterious cranky men.

purgat0ry I quite liked Raistlin. I kind of felt sorry for him when Caramon would over shadow him as a kid being that Caramon was the stronger one. I always knew he would go over to the darker side... Oh I love mysterious cranky men. I enjoyed the love hate relationship he has with his brother. Naturally he loves his brother, but hates him for his over protectiveness. I honestly feel that one of the hidden reasons Raistlin tells Caramon to go with Tika and not with him at the end of Chronicles is to protect Caramon (at least till he's needed again).

Raistlin is probably my favorite character. I really like him more before the black robes though. I felt that his abition and strive for something more was fiercer before he got the power to achieve his goals with alot less effort.

Can anyone blame Raist for burning holes in Dalamar's chest? I mean, Dalamar was betraying him to the Conclave. If I were Raist, I would have been pretty pissed off, too.
Nuitari be with you.

Yes, Dalamar was relaying info to the Conclave, but Raist knew about it the entire time. It really isn't hard to figure out...You are declared a renegade wizard and a short time later, some pretty boy elf shows up at your door saying "Hi, the I've been sent to be your apprentice"...they must have thought Raist was an idiot...otherwise they would have covered themselves a little better. Even if Raist put Dalamar through his own trials before taking him as apprentice, he would have known from the get go...and as we all know, Raist used it to his advantage.

Given all the other schemes Raist came up with, he probably had it all under his thumb from the beginning. He OFFERED to take an apprentice. He probably wanted one not just to teach the magic, but to also have a connection to the Conclave. Spying goes both ways, after all.
