Edward and Alphose Elric broke this rule when they tried to bring their dead mother back to life and they paid the price. Ed lost an arm and a leg and Al lost his entire body, his spirit now residing in an old suit of armor.
The Elrics now have only one desire; to fix their bodies. In order to gain the knowlege to succeed this task, Ed has become a State-licensed Alchemist, working for the government in an attempt to locate the legendary Philosopher's Stone, a stone powerful enough to bybass the Law of Equivalent Exchange.
