After getting some more food for Catherine, Chris decided to continuing looking for some form of gainful employment. He did his best to appear friendly, even though his was feeling very nervous being around a bunch of people, especially in a strange new place.

Along the street Chris happened to be walking there was a Blacksmith's shop, one of the well known ones in Loghedge; Samuel's Ironwork's. Samuel himself was a large, rugged, older man of 40 year, and did most of the Smithwork himself, sometimes having an apprentice come and then go when they felt they've learned enough, or had hit their thumb one too many times with the hammer.
The blacksmith grabbed the horseshoe he had just finished hammering with a pair of tongs and dunked the hot metal in a pot of water, making it hiss, before he took it out and tossed it into a bin full of other horseshoes before getting another piece of metal to start hammering on it.

Chris looked up at the sign, than at the shop front. The place looked pretty nice and the wears in the window looked to be of good quality. Perhaps this is what he had been looking for. He walked into the store and looked closely at the finely crafted items. Even the simple everyday items were quite nice. Chris walked over to some knives and short and long swords that caught his eyes. They looked to be crafted very well for the metal that is avalible. A bit pricey, but you get what you pay for. This craftsman has talent. Chris looked around for the smith hoping that he is a desent man and looking for help. He needed money and something to do, something he could use his skills, knowledge, and creativity for.

Samuel spotted Chris from the corner of his eye, pausing in his hammering. He wasn't finished with the dagger he was crafting, so he stuck the end he was hammering into some hot coals, he didn't want the metal cooling off until he was done shaping it.
"Can I help you Sir?" The Blacksmith asked, grabbing a cloth rag to wipe the sweat off his brow and face

"Ah, yes. I am new to this area, and I am looking for some work and possibly an apprenticeship." Chris paused, doing his best to look friendly, but not sure what to say. He was visibly a little nervous and hope he had put on a good first impression.
"My name is Chris." He said as he held out his hand.

"M'name's Samuel" the blacksmith's large hand gripped and shook Chris' own. To Samuel, Chris certainly didn't look like he was from around Loghedge. "Could always use some help around here, but have you ever done any metal crafting yourself? and where you from anyway?" Samuel asked, he wasn't about to hire someone off the street without getting to know something about them first.

"Nice to meet you Samuel." Chris said as he shook Samuel's hand. Chris tried to match his grip, but wasn't even close.
"Not sure if you would believe me if I told you, but I am from the large city of Orlando located in the state of Florida. As for experience, I have plenty of knowledge from reading books and watching others forge blades and verious items, as well as a small bit of hands on experience, not much though. Also had to learn as part of my swordsman training so I could recognize a quality blade, and to be able to maintain it. Primarily I was a military man and served in the Navy for a few years as a Petty Officer."

"I'll admit I've never heard of them places, Furthest I've ever been outside of Loghedge is Oxaxe, and never heard of anything called a navy either" Samuel said as he let Chris' hand go. This stranger was a puzzling one for sure, and seemed to be a learned individual, but sounded like he lacked in smithing skills.
"Well If you're going to be an Apprentice here you'll know I don't just hammer out swords or other large bladed things, most people don't have practical use for them, most folks around here need horseshoes, axes, nails, knives and hinges for doors. I make about one sword a month at most, and still have extra left over." Samuel explained as he walked over to the forge to step on some bellows at the base, heating the coals back up and making them glow hot.
"So If you've just here to learn to make a sword, you'll have to wait a while till it's proper time to teach you. You'll have to learn how to work the forge, the anvil, how to wield the hammer and shape the metal, how hot the coals must burn, then how to make the metal strong." The blacksmith folded his arms over his chest, watching Chris.
"what do you say then? you still wish to be a blacksmith's apprentice?"

Chris smiled. "When do I start? As for the Navy, it's basically like an Army, but instead of horseback we use ships. Sort of like those used by merchants to ship goods across the ocean, but swifter, armored, and made for warfare. I'll hve to tell you some of those adventures sometime." Chris was quite pleased. He was finally getting somewhere and met someone that is willing to give him a chance. Hopefully he would be able to build some strong friendships and make a desent name for himself before he grew wings, tail, horns, and claws. Having something to do and making some money was a nice added bonus.

"you must be from closer down by Caeivory then, on the coast, with the large airships I've heard they've built there, some armored boats aren't that far-fetched" Samuel said as he pumped more air into the forge.
"You can start right now if you want, but I'm not so much one for stories, plenty of work to be done....and you can start by grabbing a couple of those sacks there and filling the coal bin here with more coal, don't want to run out while I'm working" the Blacksmith said as he pointed to a group of burlap sacks tucked into a corner, each one filled with lumps of coal.
Samuel put one of his heavy gloves back on as he took the dagger out of the coals and started hammering on it again, flattening the edges out. "I'll start you out with simple tasks, and work your way up"

Chris grabbed the bags of coal and filled the bin up "No problem." Chris was glad that he was able to land some work, especially something he might enjoy doing. It sure beat hard labor or being a care giver. He looked forward to putting some of his knowledge to use.

Samuel continued to hammer on the dagger while Chris goes and fills the bins. It pleased Samuel that Chris wasn't a stranger to hard work, maybe the guy would be worth keeping around as an apprentice after all.
"good, now, theres a full crate of horseshoes here you can move to the front, the one out there is nearly empty, toss the leftovers in the full one and bring the empty one back here, do the same for the nails and spikes"

Chris went and moved the almost empty crate to the side and went back to get the full crate. He picked it up and carried to the front of the shop and sat it down right where the almost empty one had been. Chris then grabbed the remaining shoes from the bottom of the crate and stucked them on top. Chris did the same for the other items Samuel asked to be brought up front. Looks like the three months he worked as a stock person came to use. He then straightened up the store front some.

Samuel finished hammering on his dagger and stuck it in the water, causing the metal to hiss as it cooled down rapidly, steam rising up. the blacksmith could always work and sharpen the blade later. He stepped out to the front of the shop to see the job Chris had done.
"well this is all looking good, guess you're serious about sticking around and being an apprentice. you can sweep the floors and empty the ash from the forge here and then you can take off and come back early tomorrow and I'll get you started"

"THank you very much." Chris nodded and got right to the work, trying to do a very good job.
First task on my list, completed. Employment found and obtained.
After Chris finished up the work some time later, he went back to his room at the inn, hoping he could get up a little bit of coin so he could buy some parchment and a pen and ink. He had much to write down about his experiences and he needed to work out some ideas. He soon went to sleep, thinking and dreaming about the things he was going to try to do. He also dreamed of flying by his own wings. How he longed for those most of his life.
