Okay, bear with me cause I don't really know what I'm doing. I wanted to start this Kenpo guild since there isn't one specifically for Kenpo on Gaia. While I geared thiss more towards Kenpo I welcome anyone from a different traditional background; after all Kenpo is a conglomeration of many different styles: Kung Fu, Karate, Jui Jitsu, ect. Eventually, I would like to turn this into a place where interested people can find a wealth of information. Anyone interested in helping me, preferably with Kenpo experience, can drop me a PM and let me know. But, for starters, why don't you introduce yourself and give a bit of a background! (Don't forget to answer the poll question!)

well, let's seem. I'm not a martial artist. I'll start out my into simple as that. I have taking a bit of training in Judo for a security Job I had for a while, but when it comes right down to it, I'm a brawler. I grew up with the back alley fighting where the means of which you use mean nothing so long as the end result is reached. I am under the personal opinion that regardless of the amount of training one has, it can be pulled into invalidity if the situation holds in that favor. So in the end, there is no substitute for experience, and in that, I more than make up for my lack of Formal style.
On a more personal note, I grew up in Glasgow Scotland and am now putting myself though med school in the states. Only one real rule with me.
Call it a skirt, n I'll brake you. evil
that's it, anyth'n else yeh want ta know, just ask.

Welcome, thanks for joining!

Hell yeah, I totally agree with you; I know a few people who have really pretty looking forms and techniques, but you have to be able to gauge each situation as it unfolds and some, much like yourself, that doesn't try to execute an exact technique, but who instead avoids an attack and strikes back is going to fare much better then someone with a black belt and some pretty forms that doesn't get application.

I started out were you are. I was a pretty angry kid and I got into a lot of trouble (Mostly kicking the s**t out of bullies who had nothing better to do then pick on the weak). Eventually, my family got me into an after school karate program to try and channel some of my agression towards something productive.

After about 3 years of not learning much (the school I went to was more focused on generating revenue then they were on creating good students) I dropped out of the classes and didn't think much of Kenpo until about 3 years ago when I realized there was a void in my life and refound my art.

The great thing about Kenpo is that "you can leave Kenpo, but Kenpo never leaves you." Now that I'm older and more interested in the actual concepts behind Kenpo and not just the flashy kicks and pretty forms, I have a new found respect for my tradition.

Anyway, that's my story in a nutshell!

And by the way, I'll help you kick anyone's a** that calls a kilt a skirt, I'm a hot headed (without the natural red hair) Irish woman! I know the difference! I might actually wear a kilt...but dead is the soul that tries to dress me in a skirt...unless it's totally smokin', then I might be game!

Heh, Well I'm not really starting out. I'm 24 now lass, and I'm not really one for the formal stuff. Though there is one minor correction I might like to add. Some times, it's best not to avoid a hit. Some times it's better to move into it so you can make connection before they truly get any power into it, or for that matter, take the hit to land a better one.
And I got all the fights I needed when I was growing up and in school back home, seeing as I grew up in a not so good part of Glasgow. You would call it the geto in the US, but it wasn't really what we called it. it was just the north end. My school didn't have a program, and I couldn't have afforded classes outside of it, so I just learned the good old proper way to beat the piss out of someone.
Though it is refreshing to hear someone 'at appreciates back alley fighting for a change. most buggers just try and bash it, or say 'at I wouldn't really hold me own against a "martial artist" when i've put away more than a few that have come into a pub thinking themselves untouchable and lack proper respect.

That's one thing I've been working on; moving in instead of moving back. They expect it least and sometime you get a better reaction. 24 and going to med school? I admire you for that; I'm 23 and just started at the community college where I don't know what I'm going for. I don't really have a direction/career planned out. All I know is that I'm going to end up getting a useless minor in Anthropology only because it interest me.

I'm thinking about Nursing, but I grew up in the field and kind of want to see what else is out there before I settle on nursing for the simple fact that I already know it.

How much longer do you have? Are you going to specialize in anything in particular? I was thinking naturopathic medicine but I just don't think I have the motivation to go to school that long.

I'm looking into a Masters in psychology so I can go to work as a social worker. Problem is, I'm pretty indecisive!

It's a good thing. If you an surprise them, you almost always get a advantage, if not win the fight right there.

Dentistry. though I'm getting my associates in Dental hygiene first.

Well, go for what ever you feel you want to do with your life. it is yer life after all, no'one says you have to rush it.

Hey guys! Welcome, I'm getting all excited here because people are actually joining! whee This is my first guild and I'm kinda flying by the seat of my pants. I have to admit, I found you all by browsing the other MA guilds; I figured that was a good place to find people who would be interested.

Wow Phoe, your dad sounds like a machine! I have to admit I don't even have my black belt; I just got promoted to blue. I suppose if I hadn't gone on a 5 year hiatus I could have been one by now, but I'm not really in any hurry to get it.

The school I am at isn't really a school. It's more of a club; we meet 2 times a week in my instructors garage (fittingly called the "Garage of Pain") where we focus more on our movement/flow then we do jumping from one technique to the next.

It's just me, the only female, and the only colored belt. My work out partners are 3 burly black belts and a lanky but quick brown belt.

We all use to attent the same school (I was an orange belt at the time) where the others were all instructors and when our school closed down (due to a lack of management) Mr. Whitaker (my current instructor) invited me to join him and the others at the newly established Garage of Pain.

I've been there for 2 years now and feel that I have, though I am only a blue belt, obtained a better understanding of what the system is and how it works.

Basically, each night is like a mini seminar in and of itself.

Anyway, I'm rambling (like I tend to do quite frequently) and have to go so I can get back to work on time (I'm on a lunch break)

Thanks for joining deadman xd

We'll have to talk cause my grappling is lacking. I'm really good at holding people off and tiring them out, but I'm not very offensive on the ground. Thank god I have lots of stamina! lol
